A postcard picture of the USS Rogers.

This was the first ship that Robert Orta was assigned to.  He met the ship overseas in Subic Bay, in the Philippine Islands.  The day following his reporting aboard for duty, the ship sailed for the Tonkin Gulf off the coast of Viet Nam.  The ship remained at sea for over 50 days.  The seas were rough and it took many days for Robert to gain his sea legs.  The ship provided gunfire support for our troops ashore and rescue services for pilots that had to be rescued when their aircraft crashed into the sea due to combat damage.

Added 7/30/00:

An image received from a former Rogers crewmember.  The image was scanned from a magazine that he found while the ship was in Charleston going through FRAM I.  It includes the story of how the ship got its name.  It also talks of the events leading to the death of three Rogers brothers that died in action during WWII.
