LAVERGNE OF THE LIMOUSIN

The Lavergne family of which it is a question here is an old French family of the Limousin. In France, she extinct in 1833 with died of her last survivor, Victor Lavergne duBreuil of Cussac. She survives however in her Canadian descendants which lived during two hundred years the parishes of St-Thomas, St-Pierre and Saint-François on the River of the South for then dispersing in the province of Quebec.

The Holding Canon of the Tower, a genealogist of an undeniable authority according to the marquis Jean de Bony de Lavergne wrote: " One cannot remain a long time in a same place without touching, early or late, with all things and people. For this reason, in connection with LaVergne of the High-Limousin, we were brought to study LaVergne Canadian. I then to say to you that they kill from a limousine family which, to believe of it a well informed witness of XVIIIe century, was always recognized for a very old nobility of the province. According to Bush, priest of Aix and Tarn, (certificate legalized by the sior Munfrio, subdelegated of the Intendant of the Plurality from Limoges in Aix, August 1, 1771) of the Means-Age to Ancien Régime, it had representatives in the parishes of Saint-Priest-Ligoure, Castle-Chervix, Janailhac, Alixe, Cussac and Etivaux where, that and there, of old escutcheons, whose granite was scaled, carry still nowadays its very simple weapons: " Of azure with three swans of money, two and one ". It is extremely probable, if not strictly proven, that it was it which builds, at one moved back time, end of Xe century or in the beginnings of oldest XIe of the castles built with Lavergne in the parish of Saint-Priest-Ligoure. At all events, it is certain that it was the first to bear the name of it: it is because of that that one can call it the primitive family of Lavergne ".

" We know in addition, of not to doubt, that in the medium of XIVe century, another family fixed hitherto not far from Lavergne, that of Bony, came to be established there with residence. Since this date, during nearly two hundred years, the two houses Lavergne and Bony remained joint owners of the castle, where they lived in very close but definitely separate buildings. "

" In the first years of XVIe century, Lavergne of the elder branch, leaving Saint-Priest Ligoure for Vicq, came to reside in their noble house of Etivaux. At the time of the wars of religion, they were more represented with the Limousin country only by many juniors (from which goes down the Canadian branch) disseminated in hereditary strongholds their families which they had successively shared: Lavaud, Bouquet, Champagnac, Marginier, Borderie, It To fish, Chervix, etc... These branches disappeared in turn. The last survivor of Ancien Régime, that of Breuil de Cussac, finishes in XIXe century by the death of Victor de Lavergne. He did not have a descent. The name seemed definitively extinct when our information taught us that there remained honourable representatives become about it Canadian, but having kept the French heart. "

Renaud Lavergne quotes in these terms a contemporary historian: " Lavergne was founded before XIe century of militate of vicomté of Limoges, frequently quoted by the cartulaires. It is in XVe century that a marriage joined together LaVergne and Bony which shared the seigniory with them. "

It is at the beginning of XVe century that Bony added " of Lavergne " to their name. In 1665, they had come from there to bear only the name of Lavergne so that on May 4 1665, the Attorney General of the King declares the aforementioned Charles de Bony de Lavergne, noble of noble race, and him enjoint in the future to sign the name of Bony in front of that of Lavergne.

Our ancestors were thus the first to live Lavergne and the name of this place became their name and this, between XIe and XIIIe century, time when the surnames started to be of use in France.

The first two built castles with Lavergne were destroy by fire, one in the medium of XVe century, the other, December 23 1620. The current castle goes back to a few years after this last fire.

Other places bore the name of Lavergne, but only Lavergne of the parish of St-Priest Ligoure was a strengthened place.
