The CRAWDAD band was formed by Steve Gaines after he left the band DETROIT in 1974. The band was composed of members from left to right (John Seaburg - Bass guitar, vocals , Steve Gaines
- Guitar, vocals John Moss - Guitar, vocals, Terry Emery -
Keyboards , Ron Brooks - Drums, vocals.) This was the band Steve was in when he got the call from Ronnie VanZant to come join the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. This is the
band that is playing on all the tracks on the Steve Gaines "ONE IN THE SUN " CD on MCA records. I Had to tell that one because it does`nt mention CRAWDAD anywhere in the credits. The cuts on this disk were recorded at CAPRICORN Studio in Macon, Georgia, and Leon Russell`s SHELTER Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
. A lot of the tracks have been remixed but no overdubs have been added (" to the best of my knowledge" ) since the original recordings. All the tracks done at Capricorn were all recorded live in the studio, every one playing in the same room at the same time. The Shelter
cuts were recorded one or two instruments at a time, which I think makes it hard to get into a live feeling groove. If you listen closely I think you can tell the difference in the energy level between the two different recording styles. The Capricorn recordings are in my opinion the truest example of the CRAWDAD sound !
Pictured from left to right are STEVE GAINES , Guitar and vocals, it looks like Steve is playing a Fender Mustang here. ARCHIE OSBORN- Bass & vocals, JERRY SANDERS Drums & vocals,JOHNNY BURROWS Guitar & vocals and also the leader of the band. This band was in the 60`s right around the Beatle days. This is the first band that Steve was a member in. This picture looks like it was taken at a prom at the old Miami High School.
This was a band that happened in the Psychdelic era around 1968. This was about the time the song the "LETTER" was popular. This band was comprised of Steve Gaines lead guitar & vocals, Don Malchi guitar, John Moss drums, Jerry Carpenter bass, Dee Poole lead vocals and Mike Rivers keyboards. Jim Poole also played the Hammond C-3 organ.
Pictured from left to right, BIX CLEMENTS- Bass guitar, vocals, STEVE GAINES - Guitar, vocals,JIM HANSON, DENNIS TIEKEN - Drums, vocals. This band played around the Detroit area for a short time. Steve went on to play with Detroit shortly after this group.
This was a cookin band with a lot of talent. Circa 1972-1973 this band was based out of the Detroit area. This was actually The Detroit Wheels with out Mitch Ryder. This band was comprised of along with Steve on guitar & vocals, Nate Peterson bass, Terry Emery keyboards, Teddy `T-Mel Smith drums(did a stint with the Spinners), Rusty Day lead vocals (of the band CACTUS), and Bill Hodgson, guitar & vocals. You better believe these guys could play.
The CELLAR DOOR band is the second band that Steve was in. This band started in late 1966. This bands members were STEVE GAINES, lead, rhythm guitar and vocals, BOB WITHROW, lead guitar, SAM KETCHER, bass and vocals, JERRY SANDERS drums. I am looking for pictures so please stay tuned.
This was a big 10 piece horn band that Steve played guitar in.Really hard to make any money with so many people in the band but Oh was it fun to play in and listen to ! This band played in the early 70`s. It was comprised of many of the Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas boys. Gary Clark trombone & bass, Clark Rand trombone, Sam Ketcher trumpet and bass Steve Gaines, & Johnny Rose guitars, what a guitar section !,Chris Casares-bass & vocals,Ron Brooks-drums, Mike Rivers keyboards, Dee Poole-lead vocals and also band leader , and a fantastic Jefferson Airplane type psychedelic light show named the "BLITZ" Light Show, which was run by Bobby "HOP" Poole. This group played a lot of Electric Flag and Paul Butterfield Blues Band type music. This group performed a lot in Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. One of the most memorable places this group played was at a honky tonk in Corona, Ks. It was at a 1930`s and 40`s bar named the "GAY PARITA". A gay bar it definitely was`nt ! It was an old auditorium type club that used to house BOB WILLS and the TEXAS PLAYBOYS many times. A lot of good times were had at this place and also a lot of scary bar room brawls occured in which the band actually had to stop playing and take for cover ! And while this was taking place the spotlight run by HOP tried to keep beamed in on the action, so the bouncers could tell where to go to try and break it up. The building still stands today although I think the wind is the only thing that is blowing in there now.I am looking for pictures of this group to put on here also.
This is another great band that Steve was in along with John Moss. In this band Moss" MOOSE" played the drums , Mark Marcano was on keyboards, Gary Clark played bass, and Cassie Gaines sang backup vocals.I hope I got that right,It could be wrong. Let me know if you know of a correction.
Lots more to come stay tuned.
