This is the engine I'm building for my Antique Steam Powered Launch
The plans are from Elmer Verburg's
'Elmers Engines' book I recently acquired thanks to
Wallace McPeak

Old Boat Engine Page
In the above view you can see the current condition of the launch and the location of the  boiler and burner.  Nothing is as yet fastened down.
The steam engine I am currently working on is a 2 cylinder double acting, reverseable wobbler type.
Many thanks again Wallace!
I think this engine will be prefect for this project and plan to  mount it in front of the boiler .
I'm sure it will provide more than sufficient power for a launch this size !
Starting with the frame...Blocks of 1/2" & 3/8" aluminum
(scraps from the place I work),
The frame  takes shape.
The center colum is only "mocked up" in this view. This piece will require more machine work.
The base & main bearing blocks are 'line reamed' at this point and are ready for bushings. The cylinder retainer is almost complete & the drill jig will locate the steam holes for the cylinders.
The main frame steam  holes have been precicely drilled. They will be plugged later to contain the steam.
The main frame has been machined to accept the cylinder retainer, fastened with 4-40 flat head allen bolts.
The bore for the reversing valve is reamed true and ready for it's mate.
The center has been  machined to clear the flywheel. The rest of the outside of center section is roughed in
Rotary table time......for the cosmetics.
With the cosmetic work completed on the main frame ,I've decided to start on the cylinders. Fabricated from solid 303 stainless steel, the bores are machined to a mirror finish. The nubbs locating the cylinders to the main frame are also machined from the same blank. The cylinders will 'rock' back & forth on these nubbs.
Next will be to drill & tap the #2-56 holes for the cylinder tops & bottoms.
In the two above pics you can see the cylinder tops & bottoms installed. they are also made from 303 stainless steel. In the right pic you can see I still need to machine the gland nut openings to the cylinder bottoms.
The plain allen bolts have been replaced with threaded brass and fitted for the springs and hardened steel balls.
Well you can see I've been busy. The close-up shows the reversing valve, lever & pin. The center hole on the main column will be fitted for the steam intake. The crankshaft, with it's stainless steel shafts and brass flywheels, is nestled in the frame, supported by bronze bushings. The upper left pic shows where the steam will exhaust out the center of the reversing valve. I plan to connect this to the smokestack. The external steam passages will be plugged next.
I'll be posting more pics as this project progresses so check back soon !!
Please note that each series of pics (between the blue lines) represents about 1 week of my spare time...more or less.
