Lochiel letter

I believe body of A.J. Jones buried in or near Fullarton River bed within 100yds southside Flinders Hwy. LOCHIEL

This letter (postmarked Cairns, 12 January 1983) was sent to Townsville police two months after Tony disappeared. The river bed was searched on 19 January 1983 but no trace was found. However, the police running sheet reports that the river had been flowing with about 20 feet of water about a month before the search and that local police held no hope of finding anything. So was it really a hoax?
