But he hadn't come, and deep down inside she had known that he wouldn't. The days that followed had found her with only one true desire..... to be in the backyard which had now gone from a meeting place to a sanctuary. "If I can't be where you are", she had told her absent friend, "I will be where we were." And as the days stretched into nights and the nights into days, she slowly had to confirm with her mind what her heart had known all along to be true... Shoo-Fly had been taken from her. |
Spring came and went that year as always, and the long days of summer gave way to the shorter days of fall. She had sadly watched as the old, gray, weathered fence surrounding the neighbor's yard had been taken down and a new chain link installed in it's place. She had said how nice the three new small evergreens looked after her husband had finished planting them in the backyard. And she, herself, had removed the tall grass that grew in the flower bed next to the back porch step, replacing it with a mixture of perennials and annuals. She remembered how Shoo had sat next to her in the grass filled flower bed, sheltering himself from the rain as together they had watched a stormy evening sky. In this place she had planted Forget-Me-Nots and Rosemary, both plants associated with the remembering of days gone by. And, once again, she was so glad that she had taken the pictures with the little disposable camera, and had included photos of the yard as well. She remembered standing back by the evergreen trees and zeroing in on the back porch step with Shoo by her side. "I want to get pictures of the yard exactly as we are seeing it together", she had told the little cottontail. She had not known why she had done as she did that day. There were no plans of moving in the immediate future and thoughts of a soon separation from Shoo-Fly had never entered her mind. But now she thanked whatever course had guided her and treasured these pictures of "Shoo-land", as they knew it, as much as the pictures of her forever friend. The elderly lady sighed as a fresh tear ran down her face... so warm against the coldness of her skin. Almost forty years had passed, yet she remembered these events as though they had happened only yesterday. Slowly she opened her eyes, surprised to still see a multi-colored sky. "What a beautiful rainbow", she thought... and closed her eyes for the very last time. |
