"The Reunion" |
Saturday, May 8th., had been another very busy day. Her daughter was leaving that day and had to be taken to a place quite far where she would pick up the car she would be driving home. Arriving home after the drive, she remembered pondering what to do about a party she had been invited to attend that evening at a neighbor's home. Finally, deciding to go, she had looked out the door to see if Shoo was in the yard so she could feed him before she left... |
but the little cottontail was no where in sight. She remembered thinking that this was quite odd. He always came around that time of the day. So, before leaving the house she had put food in his bowl with the treats and placed it beside the step where they always sat in case he came while she was gone. Coming home later that evening, she had gone to the back door and stepped outside... but no small brown cottontail had come running to greet her. She looked down at the food bowl.. The food had not been touched. "Shoo, where are you?" she had asked into the night. Sitting down on the step she looked to the evening sky to find the star they always watched together. She had never felt so alone.. From somewhere in the night a bird called. What kind of a bird calls at night, she wondered? Finally, after one last look at the untouched bowl of food, she rose from the step and went into the house. Surely she would see her friend in the morning. . |
