Review:
Eraserhead
is one of the strangest films ever made. The master of the bizarre, David Lynch
(The Elephant Man, Twin
Peaks, Crumb (Prod.),
Blue Velvet), spent nearly five years making Eraserhead, which would
be his first full-length feature film. Many people have different theories about
what it really means and no interpretation seems to be the same. The film appears
to be about an average guy, who happens to have a weird hairstyle (Jack Nance).
He lives in a very dark and depressing apartment with his girlfriend and their
outrageously deformed child in what I assumed to be a post-apocalyptic future.
Oh yeah...I forgot to mention there is a strangely deformed woman who seems to
live in Henry's radiator. Perhaps more bizarre than watching this film is listening
to it. A mix of wind and machinery fill in for the lack of dialogue. I have read
that: "Lynch has admitted that the atmosphere of tension and fear that dominates
Eraserhead grew largely out of his own experience living in a dangerous
area of downtown Philadelphia and trying to care for his daughter Jennifer, who
herself was born with clubbed feet and had a very difficult childhood". Eraserhead
must be seen because a review can do it no justice. -Review by Aaron Caldwell
