Introduction to Lories & Lorikeets
Lories & Lorikeets belong to a very special group of parrots called Loriinae.
This species of parrots is generally defined as being a group of medium-sized parrots with brilliant, glossy plumage.
Loriinae are unique from other parrots, in the fact that they have a diet which consists primarily of nectar, pollen, fruit, occasional insects, and a few other foods.
Unusual physical characteristics include a brush-tipped tongue, which they use to extract nectar and pollen from their native flowers and trees.
Lories and lorikeets are essentially the same birds, however lories are a bit larger by definition, and have shorter, more "square-like" tails, whereas lorikeets have more slender bodies, and longer tails.
