Housing for Lories

Lories require a cage which might otherwise be considered large in comparison to their size.

This is due to the fact that lories are extremely active, gregarious birds, therefore they need extra room to facilitate their movements.

Amazon-sized cages are ideal for lories, but due to the expense of these types of cages, this is not feasible for most lory owners. Don't worry. There are some other good alternatives out there.

In most cases, 2'X 2'X 3' dimensions should be considered adequate enough space for a single lory.

Large finch-breeding cages work exceptionally well for lories as well.

If a bird cage cannot be found with the preceding dimensions, many people have found satisfactory results from subsituting ferret cages.

Depending on the size of the lory, even a cage-type wire dog-kennel may work (for larger lories.) Usually, these types of kennels are coated w/ a black plastic (or acrylic surface), & look more like a cage than a pet-carrier. Some may have narrow enough grating, which large lories cannot fit through. (You will just have to test your lory in one of them to be sure if it's a right fit.)

Be careful of rabbit hutches, as this wire might be galvanized, and therefore toxic to lories, who love to nibble.

Lory owners might additionally benefit from acrylic cages/coating, because it facilitates easier clean-up of lories' runny droppings.

In summary: A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that the cage is probably good enough size if the lory is able to turn easily, jump & flap around, & if they are not hindered by the cage dimensions while playing.

Here is a side-view of a suitable sized lory cage. (You cannot see from the picture that this cage is actually almost 3 feet wide when viewed from front.) Full-spectrum lighting has been placed 12 inches above the cage, to enhance lories' health, and quality of life. A nest box has also been added on to the front of this lory-pair's cage.
