The Hebrew word “mal’ ak” means “messenger”, “representative”, or “angel”.  It is used of both human and supernatural messengers, and the context will usually determine which is intended.  The mission of a “mal’ ak” is to carry a message, fulfill a specific, special commission, and/or represent the one sending him.  The supernatural beings called “angels” are also referred to by other names, “sons of God” (meaning direct creations of God or like God in certain ways, Job 1:6; 2:1), “mighty ones” (Psa. 29:1), “heavenly beings” (Psa. 89:6), “holy ones” (Psa. 89:5, 7; Dan. 4:13, 17, 23; 8:13).  The angels were created by God (Psa. 33:6; Col. 1:16) and were witnesses to the creation of the material universe (Job 38:4-7).  They serve as members of God’s eternal court (Job 1:6, Isa. 6:2-4) and are exhorted to praise Him (Psa. 103:20, 21; 148:2).  Angels are sometimes called “hosts” (Psa. 103:20, 21; Lk. 2:13), “principalities, rulers, powers, authorities” (Eph. 3:10, Col. 1:16).

There are different orders and different types of these powerful beings (Dan. 10; Isa. 6:2, Jude 1:9; Gen. 3:24).  The cherubim, for example, have traits of both humans and animals (Gen. 3:24; Psa. 18:10; Ex. 25:18-20; Ezek. 1:5-14; 10:8, 19-22).  Angels in the O.T. have a protecting ministry to God’s people (Ex. 23:20; Dan. 3:28; 6:22; 2 Kings 6:17) and were involved with God’s judgments on sinful people (Gen. 19:1; 2 Sam. 24:17; 2 Chron. 32:21; Isa. 37:36). Seraphim seem to deal with uncleanness in the people of God (Isa. 6:2-7).

Lucifer/star of the morning/shining one (Isa. 14:12), later to become Satan/the devil, was created an angel by God.  Satan leads a host of fallen angels (Matt. 25:41), who, like him, fell from their original state.  They chose not to keep their position of authority but abandoned their proper or own home (Jude 1:6) and as a result are condemned to eternal judgment (2 Pet. 2:4).  These are called demons.

One of the persons of the Holy Trinity, probably Christ, is called “the angel of God” (Ex. 14:19 with 13:21; 2 Sam. 14:20; Gal. 4:14) and/or “the angel of the Lord” (Gen. 16:9, 10, 13; 22:11, 12, 15-18; Ex. 3:2, 4-7; Num. 22:23-31; Judges 2:1-5; 6:11-23; 13:3-22; Zech. 12:8).  The phrase “an angel of the Lord” however, usually refers to a celestial spirit (Matt. 28:2; Lk. 1:11, 19).

Good angels in the NT are closely associated with the first (Matt. 1-2; Lk. 1-2) and second comings (Matt. 13; 24-25) of Jesus.  They are created by Christ, Who is head over all powers (Neh. 9:6; Col. 1:16; 2:10).  They minister to believers (Heb. 1:14).  The Greek word “angelos” means “messenger” or “angel”.

[“Michael” in Dan. 10:13; 12:1 is a chief/great prince or archangel, Jude 1:9, who stands guard over the nation Israel, Dan. 10:21 and fights Satan and demons, Rev. 12:7.].

[“prince of Persia and of Greece” in Dan. 10:13, 20 means high-ranking demons assigned to nations by Satan to oppose godly forces and influences. Since humans can’t physically fight angels, who are spirit beings, these “princes” have to be demon forces. In Eph. 6:12, four different ranks of demons are listed.].
