Later, as they lay on the grass, the fear grew inside Max. She had done it again. Slept with Alec and this time she knew perfectly well what she was doing. She could have stopped it, she should have, but a part of her didn't want to. A part of her wanted to do it again.
"Alec," she whispered quietly. "Alec, I'm sorry, I think we made a mistake."
Alec sat up alarmed. He turned to look at her, and she could see the pain in his eyes. "A mistake?"
"We shouldn't have let things get this far. I should have known."
"Max, I'm sorry," Alec said, defeated.
"I...I have to go," Max told him, getting up, holding a towel to herself and running for the house. Alec grabbed his own towel and took off after her.
Alec followed her in the house, clutching the towel against him. "Max, wait!"
Logan walked through the door oblivious to anything that had happened.
"Logan!?" Max spoke.
"Am I interrupting something?" Logan asked, glibly.
"No...no...we were just..." Max stammered and turned to Alec for help, but Alec just looked at her wide eyed.
'It's over' Alec thought to himself. What a perfect end to a perfectly fucked up relationship.
Max turned her gaze from Alec, afraid of the hurt she saw in his eyes.
"Logan, why are you here? Is it about White?"
"Unfortunately, yes." Logan nodded. "I was doing some research and I went out to meet a contact. I guess Joshua stopped by and..."
"And what?" Max growled.
"I guess I was careless and left all the information I had accumulated right there in the open, where anyone could see it...it was a stupid thing to do. Joshua must have seen it. He must have...he knows where White is headed, and I haven't heard from him in two days."
"Two days! Two days!?" Max yelled annoyed. This was the last thing she needed. The last time Joshua had gone out to take his revenge on White, he ended up locked up and now - who knows what was going to happen. Max took a deep breath and studied Logan's face. Under her scrutiny Logan readjusted his glasses, trying to become invisible. "So you're telling me Joshua went out to find White by himself and you waited two whole days to tell us?"
"I didn't say he went by himself. For all I know he could have taken an entire army of transgenics with him," Logan told her, seeming to shrink under her tough as nails attitude.
Alec scoffed in the background. He had become invisible, which probably irked Logan who was trying hard to do the same. Only Alec didn't want to be invisible, he wanted the heat, the passion, the undivided attention of Max. He knew this was going to happen. Why he let himself care, he didn't know. But he knew in a room where Logan and he both shared, he would always be the least noticed, even if Max couldn't remember the other guy. 'Fuck!" Alec screamed inside his head. He wanted to jump up and down and wave his arms just to get her to look at him, but instead he cleared his throat. "We better pack up and get going."
Max barely turned to look at Alec, when she nodded and headed for the bedroom.
Once alone Max grabbed her clothes and hastily threw them in her suitcase. She turned when she heard someone enter the room and knew it could only be Alec.
"Max!?"
"Not now Alec!"
"But..."
"I said not now!" Max bit out harshly and Alec fumbled for his things and then left her alone.
Max crumbled against the bed, hiding her face in the quilt of the unmade bed. She was in a predicament. How could she tell Alec that everything that had happened while they were together, no matter how tense and how scared she had seemed to be, were the most perfect times of her life and that she didn't want to go back to the city. She didn't want to go back to the smog and city life full of crime. All she wanted was to stay with him, huddled under these blankets that still smelled like him and hold him and let him do the same for her.
"Stop it Max! Stop being such an idiot," she scolded herself in a low voice.
Alec packed his clothes into a crumbled bag ignoring the hole Logan was drilling into his back from his constant starring. "Look, if you have something to say just say it already."
"What exactly went on here?" Logan asked sceptically, taking in Alec's shaking hands and wet hair and half naked body.
"Nothing. Forget it," Alec grumbled.
"You better not have hurt her Alec." Logan puffed out his chest as if he could go head to head with a supped up transgenic.
"Logan, I didn't hurt her. Why the fuck does everyone always think the worst of me anyway?" Alec walked past Logan and roughly bumped into him. "I'll be in the car." He slammed the door behind him. Once outside, he stood on the porch, pissed and wanting to hurt something, namely Logan's face, he settled for the brick column beside the house.
Max came out of the bedroom and looked around. "He's waiting in the car," Logan piped up. "Max, what went on here?"
"Oh Logan, just hold me," she whispered and wrapped herself in his arms.
Logan surprised, but also extremely happy, held Max and smoothed down her hair.
Alec threw his bag in the back of the trunk. He paced outside of the car and realized he had forgotten his t-shirt. Walking back in, it was like a swift kick to his chest when he saw Max in Logan's arms.
Max looked up and couldn't hide the surprise and regret that formed on her face. "Alec!?"
"It's okay Max, I get it," Alec said, harshly and walked out again, without bothering to grab his discarded shirt.
