Case Skinning Coyotes The process I use for case skinning the Eastern Coyote is the same method depicted in Roy Finley`s Two Minute Coyote video. The coyote is anchored by the hind legs and the hide is pulled down and over the animals head with the aid of a come-a-long. About twelve feet of floor space will be required to perform this task, the coyote will be skinned in a horizontal position and off a table about waist high. The coyote is held by one hind foot with a rope while the initial cuts are made in the hide around the rear legs just below the leg joints, down the legs , around the vent and around the front legs. Once the initial cuts are made , two hooks attached to ropes or chains are inserted into the legs just below the joint on both rear legs between the leg and the tendon. This will hold the coyote while you winch from the other end. Pull the hide from the legs by hand down the carcass towards the head until you reach the tail. Pull the bone from the tail and then continue to pull the hide down towards the head. At this point you can insert something like a small hockey puck under the rump fur and use a rope with a noose around the fur and the puck, then snug it up.The rope loop will be on the flesh side of the hide. Tie the other end of the rope to an extended come-a-along and winch it tight so the animal is lifted off the table. Be very careful around any holes or snare lines, it`s best to use your knife around these areas. Pull the hide ahead until it starts to pull over the front shoulders and down the front legs. A white section will appear around the shoulder area and it becomes very difficult to pull the hide any further. At this point take something dull and similar to a very long screwdriver and work it between the hide and the front leg at the armpit. When the instument is pushed through it will be used to pull the hide from the front legs. Once the front legs are free continue winching until the ears are exposed, cut them through near the base to the skull and continue winching and skinning towards the nose until the hide is free from the carcass. Note: I use a regular hockey puck and cut it down in size to about two inches and then round off the edges. |
