The IAF acquired large numbers of Skyhawks, some new and some old. Upon arrival they became Israel's "flying artillery" in the War of Attrition which followed the Six Day War. They bore the brunt of the work repelling the Syrian and Egyptian attacks at the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. Skyhawks have also scored victories in air to air combat by downing Syrian MiGs with guns and once even with unguided air-to-ground rockets at close range. Besides their operational role, Skyhawks are used as the advanced jet trainer of the flight school and at the operational training unit (OTU).
