Wood Lane Underground Station

Photographs - Page One

On 10th August 2003 I was fortunate to be able to participate in a visit to the abandoned London Underground Railway station 'Wood Lane', used for filming the Thames television series The Tomorrow People. The visit was, of course, supervised by London Underground staff and we had to abide by strict health and safety rules. Such an endeavour is not lightly undertaken!

We started our tour at White City Underground Station - 19 middle aged men, two teenage boys and me. I felt ... rather out of place as you can imagine! On the hottest day in recorded history we were dressed in high-visibility vests and standing in the sun!
By arrangement with the line control centre we hopped onto a train at White City station and the driver stopped at Wood Lane's still active Eastbound platform to let us out through his cab.
It was dark in there - very dark. The platform dwindled into the distance, stopping much light coming up the tunnel. The high visibility vests suddenly made a lot more sense.
But there was enough light to be sure of one thing - we were at Wood Lane!
It was a bit eerie to be standing on the platform of a station abandoned for so long. Cables and equipment had been strung up on the walls, modern intruders in a much older world. Underneath the dust and soot the tiles were still a clear and vibrant green - almost garish to modern eyes.
But then I spotted a familiar view - hadn't I seen those steps somewhere before? The sunlight shining down the stairwell was almost dazzling. The steps lead down from somwhere in the region of the above ground station buildings and are presumably how the bulk of the vandals got into the station. And probably how Ginge and Lefty did too!
