Battle of the Planets/G-Force entry date: Oct 1, 2001
BATTLE OF THE PLANETS/G-FORCE: The anime series, Gatchaman, was dubbed in English twice by two different production companies. The first version is called "Battle of the Planets" and the second is "G-Force." Both use about the same episodes of Gatchaman but in each series the characters names and some plot elements are different. The third series, called "Eagle Riders", dubs various episodes from the sequels to Gatchaman, Gatchaman II and Gatchaman F. GATCHAMAN SUMMARY: Ken, Joe, Jun, Jinpei and Ryu are members of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, a group of teenagers that fight off alien invaders led by Berg Katse and Sosai of the Galactor organization. The Gatchaman team are advised by Dr. Nambu. BATTLE OF THE PLANETS SUMMARY: Mark, Jason, Princess, Keyop and Tiny are members of the G-Force team, a group of teenagers that fight off alien invaders led by Zoltar and the Great Spirit from the evil Planet Spectra. G-Force is advised by Chief Andersen. Battle of the Planets was the first English dub of Gatchaman, but was very different than the original. Because of children's television standards at the time, mostly all of the fighting scenes, violence and death were cut. Many other scenes were also cut and replaced with US animated scenes of 7-Zark-7, a robot who narrates each episode and communicates with G-Force. Also, since Star Wars was out at the time, Battle of the Planets played on the space and aliens aspect. Many adventures took G-Force to other planets when in Gatchaman they fought all their battles on Earth. Plus Keyop could only speak a few words. Battle of the Planets also skipped many episodes, including the last four due to the violence and death in them. Battle of the Planets aired in syndication from 1978 until 1982 and introduced many to the world of anime. G-FORCE SUMMARY: Ace Goodheart, Dirk Daring, Agatha Jun, PeeWee and Hoot Owl "Hootie" are members of the G-Force team, a group of teenagers that fight off alien invaders led by Galactor and Computor. G-Force is advised by Dr. Brighthead. G-Force was the second English dub of Gatchaman. When Sandy Frank Productions' rights to the series expired, Turner Entertainment bought them and re-dubbed the Gatchaman series as G-Force. This dubbed version is closer to the original series, keeping in mostly all of the fighting scenes, violence and death, so no need for 7-Zark-7. Instead of skipping many episodes like Battle of the Planets, the first 87 episodes were dubbed, except two. The last eighteen episodes were not dubbed due to finanical reasons. The only complaint about G-Force is the music, which is the same monotone techno drum beat used throughout all the episodes. G-Force originally aired for a week in 1986 on TBS Superstation. In 1995, Cartoon Network ran the entire series for the first time.
