Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles entry date: July 20, 2000
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1987-1997 series) original airdates: Dec 14-18, 1987 mini-series, Oct 1, 1988-Aug 27, 1993 in syndication, Sept 8, 1990-Sept 1997 on CBS later airdates: Oct 13, 1993-Sept 6, 1996 on USA Network episodes: 193 (NOTE: #76 was skipped in the production number order so only 193 episodes exist) animated by: Murakami-Wolf-Swenson (1987-1992) and Fred Wolf Films (1992-1997) distributed and owned by: Fred Wolf Films Production and Mirage Studios TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES SUMMARY: One of the longest running toy/cartoon combinations, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The comic book series was independenly published by Mirage Studios. The comic introduced us to the turtles, who were mutated into humanoid forms by radioactive mutagen. The turtles were trained in the art of ninjitsu by master Splinter, a mutated rat. Splinter named the turtles after Renaissance artists, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo. The Ninja Turtles befriended TV news reporter April O' Neil. The Ninja Turtles fought the evil Foot Clan of ninjas led by the Shredder. In 1987, a 5 part animated mini-series aired, followed by a regular series next year. Playmates launched a line of action figures that soon flew off toy shelves. In 1990, a feature lenght film debuted, grossing $135 million at the box office. CBS picked up the animated series for their Saturday morning block. Two sequel movies were made, but did not perform as well. Playmates made hundreds of figures from 1988-1998. The animated series lasted nine years with 193 episodes. Over-exposure, I think, caused the downfall of the Ninja Turtles, but it was at top of its game longer than most. But the turtle craze has begun again! In 2003, a new cartoon featuring storylines that mirrored the original independent Mirage comic series and a new hot toy line debuted! EPISODE GUIDE (in production number order) 5-Part Mini-Series (1987 in syndication) #001 Turtle Tracks (12.14.1987) April O' Neil is investigating robberies at scientific firms, when she is attack by a gang of punks. She is cornered in the sewers but is rescued by four talking ninja turtles. After she recovers from the shock, the turtles' ninja master, Splinter, explains their origins and they agree to help her look for the thieves. Their search takes them to a fake security firm and they face the Foot Clan, who turn out to be robot ninjas. After meeting back with Splinter, he is convinced that his old enemy, Oroku Saki is involved in all this. #002 Enter the Shredder (12.15.1987) Oroku Saki, now the Shredder, is tunneling under the city in his Technodrome fortress. The Shredder knows he must get rid of the turtles to complete his mission. The evil Krang, a talking brain from Dimension X, has given the Shredder all his technology to aid him in conquering the Earth. Krang suggests using the mutagen he used to make Splinter a rat, on the punks. After stealing a rhino and a warthog from a zoo and capturing Splinter, Shredder leads the turtles into a trap. But the turtles make short work out of the dimwitted Bebop and Rocksteady. #003 A Thing About Rats (12.16.1987) The Shredder finds Baxter Stockman, a scientist that has invented Mousers, robots that can catch rats. He proceeds to make thousands of them and sends them after Splinter and the turtles. #004 Hot Rodding Teenagers From Dimension X (12.17.1987) After the Mousers fail, the Shredder decides to get some extra help from Krang's world, Dimension X. When he opens the portal, a gang of teens, the Neutrinos come through along with two of Krang's Stone Warriors in pursuit. The turtles team up with the Neutrinos and return home after battle. #005 Shredder and Splintered (12.18.1987) The Shredder agrees to finally complete Krang's new body to defeat the turtles. When Krang faces the turtles he uses his molecular ampflication unit to enlarge himself into a giant and goes into the city. Donatello and Leonardo sneak inside Krang to shrink him down. Splinter faces the Shredder and destroys his retromutagen gun to save the turtles, but the device would have also made him human again. The turtles follow Krang and Shredder back to the Technodrome where they have started calling in the Stone Warrior armies. Donatello successfully reverses the portal and the Technodrome sucks itself into Dimension X along with the Shredder and Krang. April reports on the turtles' battle with Krang and they become the city's heroes. 1st Season (1988-1989 in syndication) #006 Return of the Shredder (10.01.1988) #007 The Incredible Shrinking Turtles (10.08.1988) #008 It Came From Beneath the Sewers (10.15.1988) #009 The Mean Machines (10.22.1988) #010 Curse of the Evil Eye (10.29.1988) #011 The Case of the Killer Pizzas (11.05.1988) #012 Enter: the Fly (11.12.1988) #013 Invasion of the Punk Frogs (11.19.1988) #014 Splinter No More (11.26.1988) #015 New York's Shiniest (12.03.1988) #016 Teenagers From Dimension X (12.10.1988) #017 The Cat Woman From Channel Six (12.17.1988) #018 Return Of The Technodrome (12.24.1988) 2nd Season (1989-1990 in syndication) #019 Beneath the Sewers (09.28.1989) #020 Turtles On Trial (10.02.1989) #021 Attack of the 50 Foot Irma (10.03.1989) #022 The Maltese Hamster (10.04.1989) #023 Sky Turtles (09.29.1988) #024 The Old Switcheroo (10.16.1989) #025 Burne's Blues (10.11.1989) #026 The Fifth Turtle (10.06.1989) #027 Enter: The Rat King (10.13.1989) #028 Turtles At the Earth's Core (10.20.1989) #029 April's Fool (11.21.1989) #030 Attack of Big M.A.C.C.
