Our heroine is an energetic elementary schoolgirl, living with her father, Fujitaka, and brother, Touya. Her mother, Nadesico unfortunately passed away when Sakura was 3 years old.
Sakura stands out in the crowd. She's pretty like her mom, and she always smiles, making her even prettier. She's very nice, understanding, courteous, and VERY unselfish. She tries to get along with everybody, and she succeeds eventually. It seems that every person she meets is fascinated with her constantly cheerful face and shining emerald eyes...Everyone, even Syaoran, eventually. She thinks of others before thinking about herself. She's very innocent too...Innocent and naive, and VERY clueless in some of the most obvious things...
Sakura studies at the Tomoeda Elementary School, in 4th grade at the start of the series. She's overall an average student, except she hates math, and...she's usually late, if not exactly on time.
Sakura is very athletic. She loves sports. She's a member of the cheerleading club (and she's VERY good at it). She's very nimble and flexible, and she's also a great runner (100m dash and marathon running).
Aside from math, she HATES ghosts. She's totally petrified even talking about them. But, even when her friends are talking about them, and she's VERY scared, she doesn't really force them to stop (beg, maybe...) because she doesn't want to spoil their fun.
Sakura's favorite flower is... yup, you guessed it... sakura (cherry blossoms), a flower unique in Japan. Her favorite colors are pink and white (just look at her room! it's soo kawaii!) And her favorite expressions are the famous "HOEEE!!!" and "Hanyaan..." ^_^
Sakura loves noodles (though she loves to eat anything, anyway) and her best recipe are pancakes and spaghetti. She is, in fact, VERY good at cooking. Although, at the start of the series, she can't even fry, she learns quick. Sakura learns quickly when she wants to. She did this with (as mentioned) cooking, ice skating, skiing, and...catching cards.
One day, while cleaning in their house, she discovers a book in her father's shelves...it was GLOWING. she opens it and sees a card. "Windy," she reads. Suddenly, the wind blew around her, making the cards inside the book fly everywhere. She meets Cerberus (aka Kero-chan), the guardian of the book. The aforementioned book, as it turns out, is the Clow Book. Being responsible for setting the cards free, she becomes a card captor, catching the magical cards. And so, the adventure begins...
Notes about the name:
Being born April 1st, Sakura is named so because, sakura bloom during April. But just because this is so, it doesn't mean that everybody calls her that. True, she's Sakura-chan to almost everyone...Aside from that, she's:

"Sakura-sama" to Cerberus/Yue (in real form) and also the cards
"Sakura" to Syaoran (though at first, he calls her "Kinomoto")
"Kinomoto-san" to Meiling
