The history of the United States began long before the first colonists set foot on these shores.  The Magna Carta, written in 1215 in order to try to convince King John of England to give the people certain rights, is generally considered to be the touchstone of liberty, upon which later documents are based.  From that beginning, this yearning for freedom led to the adoption of The Declaration of Independence by the thirteen American colonies on 4 July 1776.  American democracy was born.

Every day thousands leave their homelands to come to "the land of the free and the home of brave" to live out their American dream, making us a truly diverse and dynamic nation  made up of myriad cultures and customs.  But on July 4th, Americans, whatever the country of their birth, whatever the homeland of their ancestors, come together to celebrate that freedom and independence declared in 1776.

Through the miracle of modern technology we have seen liberty grow throughout the world.  We learn about, and communicate with, people of different nations and diverse cultures, making us indeed a global village based on a closer understanding and knowledge.  Through this miracle I invite all nations to celebrate with us on this first Fourth of the new Millenium.

Happy Birthday America!!
