Obituary of Samuel Lewis

Rockville Tribune, Indiana June 27, 1911

Samuel Lewis died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Charles H. Baker, early Monday morning, June 19, after a lingering illness of several months. Previous to January, Mr. Lewis had lived alone at his home, five miles east of Rockville, but on account of becoming too feeble to care for himself he was brought to the home of his sister, the first of January, where he had made his home until his death.

Mr. Lewis was formerly a carpenter by trade, and worked for J. J. Daniels many years ago in helping construct the numerous bridges over Parke county. Becoming crippled with rheumantism, he was forced to quit the carpenter trade and drove a hockster wagon until he was forced to gie it up on account of failing health.

A short funeral service was held at the home of Mrs. Baker, Tuesday morning. A quartet composed of J. W. McHatton, Mr and Mrs. William Lambert and Miss Lizzie Bobson sang “Rock of Ages”. Rev. W. T. Harbrechenread some appropriate versed form the Bible, followed by a prayer by Rev. Z. D. Maris. After reading the obituary Rev. Barbre made a few appropriate remarks, after which the quartetsang another selection.

The remains were taken to the Barnes Cemetery, east of Judson, for interment. At the grave, Rev. Barbre read from the scriptures and offered prayer.

Robert Samuel Lewis, son of Charles A. and Martha Ann Lewis, was born April 18, 1839, and died June 19, 1911, aged 72 years, 2 months, and 1 day. He was born in Pittsylvania County, Virgina. At the age of twenty he moved to Parke county, where he had since made his home. He confessed his faith in Christ at a meeting held at the Boyd School house in 1871, and his love and trust in Christ never wavered through affliction and sorrow. Although for many years his great affliction had kept him from the house of God, his faith have ever been the same. He was kind and affectionate brother, a good neighbor, sympathetic and ever ready to lend a helping hand in time of trouble and sorrow.

His parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him to the Better Land. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Martha A. Baker and Mrs. Mary E. Burnett, two brothers, Richard and James Lewis and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss, yet we feel it his eternal gain.
