5-10-03: This day, 1999, "3 sets of goslings on pond @ 3,4 & 5 respectively;" 2002, "5 tiny goslings and parents by road 1700 (second set (6) seen 5/14)." 5-11-03: This day, 1975, "Gr. blue herons nesting in Visconti flooded woodlot." 5-12-03: This day, 1998, "Lone C. goose in back yard grazing and just resting."Today, 2 geese by back garden 5-13-03: This day, 1998, "Two ospreys circled high into sky over lower marsh/Potter Rd., 1800." 5-14-03: This day, 1978, "Snapping turtle in back yard." 5-15-03: Today, Baltimore oriole flitting around in front yard maples 1200 hrs. 2 geese by back garden. Also, four deer ran sth to nth across bottom of lower field and into woods at far corner out back, 1400. 5-16-03: This day, 1997, "2nd brood of 6 goslings & parents on road 1800. 5-17-03: This day, 1999, "(Saw) C. goose family of 7 goslings; total broods= 4." 5-19-03: This day, 2001, "Brood of 10 tiny goslings and parents by road 1700." 5-23-03: This day, 1997, "Osprey hovered and circled low over pond 1200 hours." 5-24-03: This day, 2001, "Herb saw total of 15 goslings in one group (two families?)." Today, first sighting of gosling broods, 2 together with parents, 1700 hrs just off the road in pond. Nesting was in lower marsh. 5-26-03: This day, 1998, "C. goose parents & 7 goslings grazing by lily/daylily planting- 1800hrs. First time away from pond." 5-27-03: This day, 2002, "Osprey fished pond 1700; first bull frogs (croaking) 1830; pair of orioles 1930." 5-28-03: This day, 1989, "Doe with nursing triplets across pond at 1900." 5-31-03: This day, 1987, "8-12 geese landed on pond @ 2100 hrs.;" 1998, "2nd C. goose pair and 7 tiny goslings grazing in old vegie patch." 6-03-03: This day, 1998, "3rd goose family by culvert; 4 goslings- 2nd oldest. Didn't see these goslings before- why? Hiding? Now almost as large as first family of 7 goslings." 6-07-03: This day, 1993, "Huge doe & spotted fawn crossed road and ambled into H2O near edge of pond." 6-08-03: This day, 2001, "1830-family of well grown goslings paraded right to left below (perennial) border wall;" also, "family of 15 goslings on pond." 6-10-03: This day, 1998, "2nd group of 7 C. goslings down to six and only one parent in attendance. Think the parent disappeared before the one gosling. Other two families intact." 6-11-03: Today, found deer had eaten holihocks and liliums in main perennials area out back. Disaster! Also, first time a family of geese has come up from pond to the mowed area around main perennl pltg. 6-12-03: Today, 0615, lone deer going up the road from in front of house toward the woods. 6-14-03: This day, 1989, "21 geese on pond in early AM." 6-16-03: This day, 1995, "Huge raccoon out back in field by large rock @ 2000 hrs." 6-18-03: This day, 1995, "Doe roused a TINY fawn from grass in lower field at base of steep grade; seen again across the pond at 1930." Today, 1830 hrs, lone deer 75' across road from house; also, woodchuck 20' behind house at same time, eventually going into "back shed" via opening in stones under back wall. 6-21-03: This day, 1998, "Saw first doe and fawn feeding (on) far side of pond - 1900." 6-24-03: This day, 1998, "Saw earliest brood of 7 goslings & parents fly from back field to pond for first time." [Note- The 2003 broods are no where near this stage of development.] 6-26-03: This day, 1999, "1230 hrs, doe and fawn feeding along right side of Spruce Island[far side of pond]." 6-30-03: This day, 1979, "Great Blue Heron in back yard 25' behind house;" 1991, "Saw Ward's Great Blue Heron on "Dog Island." [Ward's different from Eastern. Ward's has white head and neck.] NOTE: From 1978 to 1982 on about July 4th a census of occupied Great Blue Heron nests in large trees in a swamped out woodlot below CGS' pond dam was conducted. Herb and Gert A. participated in the surveys. |
