Above are sunflowers (Helianthus anus), a favorite annual of mine. I have grown many different kinds over the years, including the multi-branched, multi-flowered and dwarf varities. Often 'volunteers' appear the next spring. Of course, the birds and bees love them for different reasons. In the past, bees created wonderful, sometimes comical, hybrids that showed up the next year when plants were grown from saved seeds.
