7-03-03: This day, 1982, "17 Great Blue Heron nests occupied." [See note at bottom of page 5.] 7-04-03: 1978, "30 Great Blue Heron nests occupied;" 1979, the number was 32 for the peak count; 1980, the number was down to 18. [Swamped out trees had begun to fall, leaving fewer and less safe nesting sites.] 7-05-03: This day, 1981, only 12 Great Blue Heron nests occupied. This was the end of the heron rookery. 7-07-03: This day, 2002, "Doe and tiny fawn across pond by Spruce Island 1500 hrs." 7-15-03: This day, 1997, "Doe and triplets in back field 1900 hrs." 7-16-03: This day, 1971, "Woodcock flew into garden;" 2000, "Orphan fawn around for second time." 7-18-03: This day, 1998, "Doe and twin 'puppy-like' fawns way out back in early AM." 7-20-03: This day, 1987, "Doe and young one across pond; goose family on pond." 7-21-03: This day, 1997, "Put up electric fence to restrict two families of grazing geese (15) up from pond ." 7-22-03: This day, 1997, "Twin fawns nursed in lower field and grazed with doe- one came with doe from dam the other from the road;" 1999, "Doe and twin fawns in field out back 0700, 11 geese, too." 7-24-03: This day, 2000, "American Egret at pond roadside & edge of islands, 1300." Today, had to remove part of a beaver dam in the pond spillway. Bs had taken a vacation for several weeks but are back at it again. We have had considerable rain the past week, so pond height has to be watched. 7-25-03: Oddly, lately crows have been foraging for earthworms in the lawns near the house. Never have seen this behavior before. Young C. geese are close to flying. 7-27-03: Today, pair of ruby throated hummingbirds 'feeding' on lilies & hosta blooms in front yard. 7-31-03: Today, Great Blue Heron (these are scarce this year) feeding on pond edge 1900 hours. 8-05-03: This day, 1992, "Huge beaver house discovered on top of dam and incorporating large willow limbs that were prostrate across the dam; house went full width of dam." [House was hidden from view by foliage.] 8-11-03: Geese report- Interestingly, the 2 (3?) families of geese have not been a bother this year, as others have been in the past when they came up near the house to forage on the cut grass. The young have been flying for a number of days now, and the families leave here for other feeding places during parts of the day. They return by late afternoon to spend the night on the pond. 8-21-03: This day, 2001, "Pair of American egrets landed on 'Beaver Island' 1230 hrs and stayed all PM." 8-24-03: This day, 1994, "Twin deer on dam w/o mother; first time seen alone." 8-27-03:This day,2002, "Am. egret feedg around pond for several days before & after this date; second on 28th 9-04-03: This day, 1998, "Btfl female (brown) marsh hawk low over pond near road." 9-05-03: This day, 1990, "Huge doe and triplets far end of back field 0800." 9-10-03: This day, 1998, "Osprey landed in willows behind dam and went down for a fish with no luck-1830." 9-11-03: This day, 1978, "40 Canada geese overnight;" 1995, "Pair Double Crested Cormorants on pond for several days;" 1999, "1600 hrs. pair of yellow labs (mix?) on dam and then swam in pond- pretty sight." 9-12-03: This day, 1991, "Osprey fished pond 0930 and landed in tree to eat." Today, geese that were around earlier from spring onward and their young are gone from here. 9-19-03: Today, 1986, "Osprey around pond 1800-1900 hrs." 9-20-03: Merlin ("Pigeon Hawk") hunted goldfinches feeding in sunflowers below the grapes; perched on blueberry screening framework." 9-22-03: This day, 1991, "Lone Canada goose flew onto pond at 1530." 9-27-03: This day, 1995, "50 or more geese came in late AM; first of the fall." 10-2-03: This day, 1997, "3 'bucks' paraded single file from 'out back' to woods above the house- 0800." 10-4-03: Today, heard calls of first migrating geese to have landed on pond; only a few, however. 10-5-03:This day, 1980,"Canada geese on pond overnight;"1998, "200 +/- geese landed on pond 1030, spent day |
