CHA CHA CLUB by SUE TILLEY |
||||||||||
ChaChas was in the back room at Heaven and instead of using the main entrance in Villiers Street, you had to queue up in Hungerford Lane, which was a very dark and dingy alley and added to the excitement of getting in. It was run by Scarlett Bordello Maria Malipasta ( aka Michael Hardy ). In the early eighties ChaChas was the place to be. It was held in an industrial type of space with scaffolding and metal staircases and had a mixed-gay clientele. These were the new young gays who liked girls and didn't want to hang out at exclusively gay bars with some dodgy drag act. Straight men liked the club because it had an easy-going atmosphere and it was much easier to get off with girls who hung round gay men because they were usually much more open-minded about sex and were quite happy to have no strings-attached one-night stands.
