Gerrer Chassidim have had a sequence of Rebbes:

• The dynasty was founded by Rav Yitzchok Meir Alter, author of Chiddushei HaRim
  • Rav Yitzchok's son, Rav Avrohom Mordechai Alter, died during his father's lifetime
• After Rav Yitzchok's death, Rav Avrohom's son, Rav Yehuda Leib Alter, who wrote Sfas Emes took over the Chassidus
• After the Sfas Emes passed away in 1905, his son, Rav Avrohom Mordechai Alter, author of Imrei Emes became Rebbe
• After his death, his son, Rav Yisroel Alter, the Beis Yisroel, became Rebbe
• When Rav Yisroel Alter passed away in 1977, his brother, Rav Simcha Bunim Alter, the Lev Simcha, became Rebbe
• When the Lev Simcha passed away in 1992, his son deferred to his uncle, Rav Pinchos Menachem Alter, the Pnei Menachem
• When the Pnei Menachem passed away in 1998, Rav Simcha Bunim's son, Rav Yaakov, became Rebbe. He lives in Jerusalem.
