Tobey, Mark

Tobey has the eye of Leonardo. Accidents of painting make things he sends to
Hans Burkhardt, sometimes helped out by himself. A
paint-soaked sponge, framed. A used palette, penciled. Sketches, drawings,
discoveries. Amusements of an intimate nature. They
give you an idea of him utilizing his craft in any way that might serve to
catch his likeness (there’s an eloquent self-portrait drawing, straw
hair, line eyes, o mouth) of an idea in the constructions and reticulated
calligraphisms he favors, quite spectacularly. |
