About Phi Mu Fraternity

A Brief History

Phi Mu Fraternity was founded on January 4, 1852 and formally announced on March 4, 1852 at Weslyan College in Macon, Georgia as the Phylmeathian Society. The three founders were Mary DuPont Lines, Mary Myrick Daniel, and Martha Hardaway Redding. It was incorporated as Phi Mu Fraternity in 1904. Phi Mu was founded only two weeks after the first women's fraternity, making it the second oldest national fraternity for college women in the world. Phi Mu was founded before the word sorority was coined which is why it is Phi Mu Fraternity despite the fact that it is an all women organization.
