As a novice bodybuilder,Tom Zenk gained third place in the October 1980 Mr. North Country championships.

He re-entered competition in May 1981 to win the
Mr. Twin Cities
(Heavyweight Division) title.

A few months later, in July 1981, Tom scooped the pool at the Minnesota championships taking out the Mr. Minnesota title in three divisions - Overall, Heavyweight and Most Muscular.
