It was an hard fought game, and every inch of the ice was at a premium. The score was 2-2 after one period, still 2-2 after two periods, but in the 3rd Rod Gilbert scored at 2:13 to put Canada ahead. But Alexander Yakushev tied it up for the Russians at 5:15 and it was still a deadlock.
It was a very tough game with the Canadians getting more than their share of penalties. It finally exploded five minutes before the end of the game when a mini-brawl started behind the Canadian goal. That's when Boris Mikhailov, pinned to the boards, took a couple of kicks at Garry Bergman, who in turn almost sucker punched him between the two referees.
When the smoke cleared it was still a tie game, that is until Paul Henderson got by both Russian defenseman at the blue line and, while falling down, shot the puck over Tretiak's shoulder into the corner of the net with 2:06 left in the game. Canada thus tied the series at three wins apiece and a draw.
