His daughter Judy told me the story of how during his first inspection aboard ship, (the U.S.S. Clay). the Capt. Inspecting asked, "John Tufts, did you shave this morning?" and John answered back, "No Sir, i don't shave Sir" and the Capt. said, "From now on you shave every day, now fall out and go shave!"..

From the Wednesday, April 2, 2008 Floyd County Times

Senator Johnny Ray Turner (left), D-Drift, honored Kentucky's first Mister Basketball, the legendary "King" Kelly Coleman (right) with a resolution on the floor of the Senate.
Reigning from Floyd County, Coleman played for the old Wayland High School Wasps from 1953-56. Former University of Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp described Coleman as one of the greatest high school players in Kentucky history, an honor he still holds.
Coleman remains the leading scorer in state history, pouring in 4,263 points in 126 games for the Wasps -- for a career average of 34 points. Many of Coleman's records remain intact despite the advent of the three-point basket, which arrived years after his playing days ended. "Even changing the rules hasn't beaten him," said Turner.

In 2005, the eight school systems in the 15th region joined together to retire Coleman's basketball jersey number. Number 66 has been forever set aside to honor this Hall of Fame athlete.

Dr. Harry Dillard

Like many others I came on this website looking for information on my father, Dr. Harry Dillard, who was employed by a coal company in 1936 or 1937 and remained there until early 1940 when he enlisted in the army. Because of the flood of 1939 (Do you know what month), my mother went to Louisville to have her baby which was me. Any information would be appreciated.

Kelly Turner

I came upon your website while searching for information about my grandfather Kelly Turner or his family from McDowell, Kentucky. He was married to Ella Gayhart also from McDowell. He died about 1952 in Pikeville. She died about 1972 in Michigan.

I am trying to get any information on the family. I recall my mother saying the Turner family owned a bank.

As I was reading your website, I recognized some of the locations from my mothers stories. She used to go play "up in Stonecole". They lived in a holler in Pikeville, KY.

Any info you can supply would be great.
Thank you in advance,

Revisiting Days At Wayland High School
Sent in by James Gordon Hall
Class of '58 at WHS

Setting here this 27th day of October 2007, I have been mentally revisiting my days at Wayland High School. Coming up in 2008 the graduating class of 1958 will be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of our graduation.

In anticipation of that important milestone, I have overlooked another very important anniversary: 1954, the year our educational advantures began at WHS. That anniversary passed me by three years ago this fall; I never even thought of it until this week.

I can remember how nervous and scared I was upon entering the high school building. Up until that time all of my schooling had taken place in small two room school buildings staffed by a teacher in the "little" room, and another in the "big" room. We did lots of studying in those old buildings up Beaver Creek. Of course, we had our morning and afternoon recesses, which were the highlights of most of those school days.

I had seen the high school building many times, but the first time I ever sat foot inside it was on the first day of the school year beginning in the Autumn of 1954. It took me several days just to adjust to such a hugh building with it's many different rooms and study hall. As time passed, I began settling down and feeling more at ease.

I still fondly recall some of the teachers I had that year. There was Mr. Slone, the math and algebra teacher, Mrs. Daniels, the language and literature teacher, Mr. Conley, the American and World histories teacher. Mrs. Harriet Johnson was my homeroom teacher that year; Mrs. Harmon had that duty the second year. I am not sure, but I believe Mrs. Harmon and Mrs Johnson alternated as our homeroom teachers throughout our tenures at WHS. Mr. L. B. Price was the principal. He was small in stature, but tougher than a buzz saw. We had Mr. Stuart as science teacher, and he may have also served as the biology teacher. I do recall that he talked quite a lot about his flying experiences as a pilot.

I will venture to say that during the first two years at WHS, basket ball was the BIG thing for most of the boys. The Wasps were red hot, especially during the 1955-1956 basket ball season. That was the season they were good enough to make it all the way to the state semi-finals. The team that knocked them out was, of course, the Carr Creek basket ball team from Knott County. As I grew older, I always thought it was ironic that the majority of those two teams were all from Knott County, with the exception of perhaps three of four of Waylands players who were from Wayland, or Floyd County. Naturally, I rooted for the Wasps.

If I have made some errors in listing the teachers herein, I stand to be corrected and won't be insulted if corrected. I do have to dig a little harder these days to bring up those precious memories, but they are still floating around in my mind from time to time.

Cemetery

I wonder if anyone might be able to assist me in finding information on an Estill Cemetery. I suspect it might also have been known as the Glo Cemetery, but I can't find anything on it.
Specifically, I am looking for any information on a Grafton Wiloughby, who died of nephritis in 1926 and, according to the death certificate, was buried in the Estill Cemetery.
This gentleman is not a relative, but my family watched over his father-in-law's grave in my family cemetery in neighboring Pike County for 82 years, until the cemetery was removed in 2003 for road construction. Grafton's father was a Union soldier who came here as an old man during the period of the great coal camp building in Eastern Kentucky. After Mr. Bracken died, Grafton and his wife moved back to Muhlenberg County in Western KY, but Grafton, a carpenter, came back to Eastern Kentucky for work. The story of Mr. Bracken may be found in the column titled "Long Journey Home" on the Blue Ridge Traditions website, www.brtraditions.com in the archive of "Bruce Hopkins Writes."

If you have any information on the Estill Cemetery, I would be very appreciative of any help you could offer.

Sincerely,
Bruce Hopkins

The Club House in Glo

The couple standing at the foot of the steps are G.B and Ruby Holt Carter. He was originally from Blaine.

My great-grandparents (G.B. Carter and wife Ruby Holt Carter) ran a boarding house in Glo for the Glogora Coal Company. My uncle, now 90, remembers riding the train to Wayland from Paintsville to visit the Carters in Glo. The train stopped in Wayland and he had to walk the rest of the way. He remembers that there was a turntable in Wayland that was hand-operated by two men that turned the locomotive around for its return trip.

Veterans Memory Bricks

Keith would you please post these pictures of the veterans and memory bricks that have been placed in the park next to the Wayland Historical Society Building. The Veterans and Memory Garden Park is very beautiful and well designed. Jerry Fultz and staff have done another outstanding job of preserving more Wayland history.

This is a wonderful opportunity for people to honor the Veterans in their family with a brick. Also in the Memory Garden section they can honor their family members with bricks as will. As most of our parents, grandparents and older family members have passed away this is a wonderful way to keep the memory of them alive. Some people did not have the opportunity to attend the last homecoming and see the park and bricks. Hopefully these pictures will encourage them to purchase bricks for their families past and present. Call Jerry at 1-606-358-9471 for details. He can also be reached by email at www.waylandhistoricalsociety@tvscable.com or write to WHS box 349 Wayland, Ky 41666.

Dave Tufts was a very helpful person to many young people growing up in Wayland. He and Mrs. Tufts were always organizing sporting events and other activities for young people. they were wonderful people.

Gene Honn

More About the above Picture

I think I can remember Curt Tufts. If he was the local barber, I remember him. Also, didn't one of his relatives operate the little general store across Beaver Creek in Glo?

I recall that several of the youth from WHS would cross the swinging foot bridge over to his store. He would sell us (collectively) enough lunch meat, bread, and pop to last us a week. We would go there at lunch time to play one of the few pin ball machines in the whole area

James Gordon Hall
1958 WHS graduate

Hi James,
Curt and his father Dave Tufts were both Wayland Barbers. I'm not sure if the family operated that small store but i will try to find out.

Keith

From James

Hey Kieth, I think I may have been wrong about the little store across the creek from WHS. I still am not sure, but I think that store was probably operated by a family named Meadows. I had a teacher in social studies whose name was Tommy Meadows, and I think he was related to the operators of that store. Sorry about all the confusion, but after all, 49 years does take a serious toll on one's memory banks.

James G Hall
1958 WHS Graduate

Update on the Glo Store

My grandmother,Goldie Vance, operated the store in Glo. The students would race over the swinging bridge to be first in line. The pinball machines would be clicking the whole time. She was very generous with the lunch portions. Most were running back so as not to be late.

Claude Frady

If anyone has a picture of the Glo Store feel free to e-mail it to me and i'd be happy to put it up on the website.

Keith

Bessie Gibson Birthday News

The family of Bessie and the late Cody Gibson had a reunion at the home of their mother Saturday, September 2, 2006. At the same time, they celebrated Bessie's having turned 90 years young this past March.
All seven of Bessie's children were present for the reunion. Son Everett(wife Margaret was unable to come) and four of his five children came from the Spokane, WA area; Ernest , his wife Jean, and three of their four daughters and three grandchildren came from Martin; Paul(wife Juanita was babysitting at home) came from Willard, Oh, and according to Brewie, entertained the entire family with his sense of humor; Maynard and wife Janet, accompanied by daughter Shawn and husband Scott and their three boys came from New Richmond, Oh. Maynard's son Michael and his family were unable to attend because he had obligations with the Army. Bessie's only daughter Brenda Gibson Manchester and her four daughters came from Columbus, Oh. Son Brewie and his wife Deanna and son Shawn, wife Trisha and their daughter Sydney Kay also came from Columbus, Oh. Son Daryl, wife Nance and their son Jarrod, a student at Alice Lloyd College were also present.
Meals prepared by Daryl were served, and many pictures were made to preserve the memories of this very special time. Brewie says "his Mom has taught Daryl well in the art of cooking because he went way beyond the call of duty keeping 10 to 50 mouths fed at all times." In the evening, the children drove Bessie to the Community Building where she could observe the Homecoming activities and exchange greetings with friends and acquaintances.
In a letter to one of the editors of this newsletter, Brewie declared, "It was a great time! Everyone enjoyed the Historical Society and the dance. John L. Hicks Remembered

I was saddened to read the news that John L. Hicks had passed away. Our families were close friends and we lived next door to each other when we were very young. We hadn't been in touch for several years, but he was my first friend and playmate and we remained good friends through school and beyond. I was a few months older, but at four or five years of age, he seemed about ten yrs older than I. I remember forays into the bath house behind their house where the miners would shower after their shifts, and in addition to loose change, once in a while we'd find some other interesting items, mostly we didn't understand what they were till they were taken from us with a harsh warning to stay out of the bath house.

I send love and my deepest sympathy to the family. I wish you peace.

Hidden In Smoke

The two Ladies hidden in the ghostly dark smoke are, Rusha Coleman (bending) and Lola Hall (standing). The picture was taken in 1976 of the two Mountain Woman burning off a Spring Garden. Close your eyes and you can still smell the spring burn-off all over town.

Thanks

Keith, thanks so much for adding the picture of our mothers burning off the hills for a garden spot. Peggy told me she had this picture, it is wonderful to see. I'll bet fire chief Elmer Morrison was a very nervous man when these two started their burning each spring. enjoyed talking with Peggy and Sondra so much during the state tournament.

Thanks again,

Hey folks, I was lucky and received a copy of the new book, King Kelly Coleman by Gary P. West for Christmas. As I began to read, and look at the photos, very fond and great memories came back. My memory was fading until I read the book.

I want to give Mr. West credit: the book states the case exactly as I remember the times I was around Kelly. I was never really well acquainted with Kelly, but we did share one class together for the last semester of 1956. I would always see him in the hallways in the Wayland HIgh School building on school days during my first two years at WHS. I did get to see him play some of those wonderful mountain high school basketball games. He was, and still is, a marvel to me.

Mr. West really captured the essence of the community as he wrote about Kelly. It is comforting to read of events and scenes you are familiar with, especially when someone else has written them. I could see nor feel any pretense of aloofness, nor any disparaging statements about the communities mentioned in the book.

Ironically, the Troublesome Creek Times a few weeks ago featured a picture of the Carr Creek Indians that stopped the Wayland Wasps in the tournament. in 1956. Alas, like the rest of us, they too have turned into old timers.

Respectfully,
James G. Hall

Flo Belcher Salisbury & Tracy Salisbury

Just a note to let my parents few remaining friends left in the Wayland, Pumpkin Center area know about them. Flo Belcher Salisbury and Tracy Salisbury were married in Garrett in 1930. Flo worked in the Garrett Company Store and the Soda Fountain. Tracy worked in the Garrett mines and in late 1930's was a Policeman when Saturday nights were wild and dangerous. He told of many narrow escapes he had with the gun-toting fighting men and women.

Later, in early 1940's, they moved to Wayland where being a Policeman was a little calmer. Flo worked at the Wayland Company Store with Anna Martin Williams Mr. Miller and others. After moving to Pumpkin Center, they had a Grocery Store, Dry Cleaners and a Texaco Station. They had many friends in Wayland.

They moved to Lancaster, Ohio in 1951. Tracy had Black Lung disease and died Feb. 2005 age 95 and Flo died Aug.2005 age 94 in Rutledge, TN. Tracy's sister was Alma Souleyrette and he was related to the Cooleys, and the Turners in Wayland, and the Allen's in Prestonsburg. He and daughter, Peggy Salisbury Harris (Wayland Class 1951), enjoyed attending the 1998 Wayland Homecoming.

Best Wishes to All.....Peggy

Class Of 1958

Info On Class of 58' Picture

I recently spoke to someone who had stopped and checked out the Wayland Historical Society Building. They informed me that they didn't get a chance to visit the upstairs portion of the building due to the hours they were there. I think they said the hours for visiting upstairs were restricted to certain hours and they were there during one of those restricted times. However, they did say that nearly all of the graduating classes from WHS had their class photos (with their gowns and caps) on display downstairs, with the exception of the class of 1958.

This is to let you know that I still have access to my class graduate photo (I gave it to my son years ago). If the '58 photo hasn't been available to you, I could possibly scan mine and send it to you via the Internet.

I graduated in '58 with such students as Linda Coleman, Becky Hall and her sister Shirley, Edgel Bradley and Gypsie Vinton. I also attended a basic math class with Kelly Coleman in the grade school building (1956, last semester or two final quarters) under the tutelage of the late Beckham Slone, who is probably remembered by many for various reasons.

Sincerely,
James G. Hall

To whom it may concern

Last year at the Homecoming I paid my dues. And from Sept. to Jan. 1, I received nothing. Then was told it was time for dues again in Jan. 2005. Well, I didn't pay again. So what is the actual renewal date of the dues?
Thank You,
A Member
shopinsuzy@copper.net

Reply From The Wayland Historical Society

Dear Member

Dues are collected for a calendar year, January 1 - December 31, regardless of which month dues are paid. Since we have only volunteers to do the record keeping, it would be impossible to keep track of when to issue reminders every month of the year.

You should have received a Turntable in July and another issue will be published and mailed in October; however, it is economically feasible to mail issues only to persons who have paid dues for the 2005 calendar year.

You,(and other members), may contact the Wayland Historical Society at whs1@bellsouth.com.

We regret any misunderstanding concerning the time limits of dues.

You Are Invited

One and All are Invited to the Mountian Arts Center (MAC) Building, located in Prestonburg Ky, next to the Contfort Inn, on Sunday Oct. 16, to celebrate the Release of the Book " King Kelly Coleman..Kentucky's Greatest Basketball Legend". I was told it would be in the afternoon. If i find out anymore on the time it will be posted on this website. Hope everyone can make it.

PRESS RELEASE FOR
King Kelly Coleman..Kentucky's Greatest Basketball Legend

King Kelly Coleman..Kentucky's Greatest Basketball Legend, written by Gary P. West, is a story about a man who played basketball, not necessarily about a basketball player.

It's about a youngster, the son of a coal miner, with 10 brothers and sisters, who became the biggest high school legend in the history of basketball-crazy Kentucky.

The footprint he left and the records he set are still being talked about some 50 years later.
His more than 4,000 career points, and 68 points and 28 rebounds in the 1956 high school state tournament have withstood the assault of some of Kentucky's greatest basketball players.

The coal town of Wayland in Floyd County in the mountains of eastern Kentucky was not prepared for that wondrous, fairy-tale year of 1956 when a local sportswriter proclaimed the high scoring phenom a King. And even though his actions on and off the basketball court never revealed otherwise, Kelly Coleman resented the title. The nickname was an unnecessary burden for any 17-year-old to carry.

As fantastic as the year was, it was a season that came very close to not happening. After his junior year at Wayland he enrolled in a $2,000-a-year military school in West Virginia. Find out what happened.

King Kelly's life was a tragedy in the sense that he never lived up to what others expected of him on the basketball court after high school.

In 1956 he was considered the best high school basketball player in the nation, ranking ahead of Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. He had just broken Wilt Chamberlain's national record for most points scored in a career, and University of Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp publicly called the King from Wayland perhaps the best basketball player of all-time.

For various reasons, revealed in this book, Kelly Coleman never achieved what others thought, and even predicted he would, although he had an All-American career at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro. Along the way he was even more of a disappointment to himself than to others.

Over the years he has frequently wrestled with the boos he received in that opening game against Shelbyville in the 1956 State Tournament. He has struggled with understanding why others would pre-judge his basketball ability at the college level and questioned his lack of being a team player.

Why would King Kelly refuse induction into the Kentucky High School Athletic Hall of Fame?
It's all in the book.

Ultimately Kelly says, for good or bad, "he has no one to blame but myself."
For the most part he has put these issues behind him. He's still fidgeting with accepting his place in Kentucky basketball history.

"If a man tells you he wouldn?t change a thing in his life, he's lying," King Kelly says.
By most accounts he has had a successful business career, but as one might expect from King Kelly Coleman, it has come with a price.

Perhaps the most revealing statement of all comes from Kelly himself. "I did a terrible job of growing up, but I've done a good job of growing old."

You can read Gary P. West's take on it all as he reveals for the first time what is fact and what is fiction in "King Kelly Coleman.. Kentucky's Greatest Basketball Legend".
