Rangers TargetsMassimo Paganin
Massimo Paganin
Rangers chairman David Murray confirmed last night that the club has opened talks to bring 26 year old Inter Milan central defender Massimo Paganin to Ibrox in a £2 million deal. Murray said, yes, there is an interest in the player and we have talked to Inter. He's the dominant force at the centre of their defence and we would like to bring him to Glasgow."
Murray also confirmed that Rangers have targeted another Inter star and that negotiations are also underway on that deal. Murray refused to name the player which is likely to spark rumours that Rangers are trying to sign Paul Ince, despite the chairman's denials.
Italian under 21 captain Alessandro Pistone is wanted by Rangers as part of a £5.5 million deal together with Massimo Paganin. Walter Smith wants Paganin to replace Richard Gough and Pistone to replace David Robertson who seems increasingly likely to leave. Paganin said, "I have received some offers and at this stage I will not say no to any of them." Rangers chairman David Murray is hopeful that the double deal can be done as soon as Inter have played the second leg of the UEFA Cup a week on Wednesday."
Inter Milan coach Roy Hodgeson has tipped Rangers £5.5 million signing targets Massimo Paganin and Alessandro Pistone to be huge hits if they move to Scotland. He said, "I don't know if they'll be joining Rangers because I'm leaving this club in the summer and they are telling me nothing. But they have been very important players for us this season and I value them highly. They would be good buys for Rangers.
Rangers manager Walter Smith flew to Italy yesterday hoping to tie up his £5.5 million double signing of Inter Milan stars Alessandro Pistone and Massimo Paganin. He also took the opportunity to check out strikers Maurizio Ganz and Yuri Djorkaeff who could be on their way out at Inter this summer in last night's UEFA Cup Final. It seems that Italian under 21 captain Pistone is likely to stay at Inter after being offered a new contract but Paganin, who is being lined up as a replacement for Richard Gough, may be ready to move to Scotland.
Inter Milan have quoted Rangers a £5.5 million fee for central defender Massimo Paganin. Rangers initial bid was a similar fee for both Paganin and left back Alessandro Pistone who now seems set to stay in Milan.
David Murray will find out on Monday if a £4 million bid for Inter Milan defender Massimo Paganin has been succesful. Rangers hope to tie the player up on a five year £3.5 million deal. David Murray rates Rangers chances of signing the player at 55-45. He said, "Inter will give the matter serious consideration at the weekend. I expect to know by 9 am on Monday."
The club have also missed out on Inter defender Massimo Paganin. David Murray said, "Paganin was never our main target and we have now dropped our interest in him." The change of heart centres around the sudden availability of 28 year old Juventus star Sergio Porrini. Porrini is also a target for Manchester Utd but has expressed an interest in joining Lorenzo Amoruso at Ibrox.
