(Ace CDCHD1088)
by Harry Young
About a decade before 'Bread And Butter', budding fiddle player Dean Mathis (Louis Aldine Mathis, b. 17 March 1937) left Bremen, in northwest Georgia and joined Paul Howard's Arkansas Cotton-pickers, a touring western swing band headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana. Like his three siblings, Dean was born in Hahira, in far south central Georgia. Marc Mathis (Marcus Felton Mathis, b. 9 February 1940) followed Dean to Shreveport in 1957.
Honing their performance skills in the colourful cocktail lounges on East Texas Avenue in nearby Bossier City, Dean and Marc soon linked up with rockabilly legend Dale Hawkins, recording 'Little Pig' (Checker 890) and 'La-Do-Dada' / 'Cross-Ties' (Checker 900) at KWKH in Shreveport. Benefiting from ties to Dale Hawkins and Stan Lewis, the (Mathis or Marcus or just plain) Brothers issued 'Lazy Susan' (Argo 5318, Billboard review 3 November 1958), 'Sioux City Sue' (Argo 5329, Billboard review 16 March 1959) and 'Sugar Booger' (Ebb 150, 1958).
The Argo and Ebb sides were recorded in Chicago at Chess / Ter-Mar Studios, 2120 South Michigan Avenue, as were 'Tell Him No' (Bullseye B 1025, Billboard review 9 March 1959, #42) and 'Cry' (Bullseye B 1026). Moonglow Harvey Fuqua wrote the B Side of 'Cry', 'The Beginning Of Love', placing the Mathis Brothers at the crossroads of soulful doo-wop and raw country rockabilly. Chess luminaries Willie Dixon, Red Holt, Paul Gayten and even Marvin Gaye contributed to the Bullseye recordings. Dean & Marc later issued 'My True Love' (Checker 995, November 1961) and the sax rocker 'Boogie Woogie Twist' (Check Mate 1008, February 1962).

Groovin' Out On Life
(Ace CDCHD 1088)
Although theoretically weaker than their Run Baby Run compilation, which draws together most of their hits, this grab-bag of Newbeats leftovers supplemented by their solo and duet work actually makes for a very good listen, with extremely varied fare, including pop, psychedelia, surf, country and even classic northern soul on bonus cut Jingle Jangle World Of Love, which comes vocal-free. There are some excellent whimsical songs and melodic gems, none more than Am I Not My Brother's Keeper. Originally the flip of Run Baby Run, it comes into its own here and is a stirring and climactic piece with plenty of high- pitched vocals courtesy of Larry Henley, for which The Newbeats were best known.

THE NEWBEATS:
Bread and Butter / Big Beat Sounds (Ace) ****
Sheltering in some undefined area between the bizarre and the simply weird, the Newbeats could have appeared in a David Lynch movie - with Marc and Dean Mathis supplying the vocal back-up to Larry Henley's distinctively piercing falsetto.
This CD features the group's first two albums, from 1964 and 1965. While there is nothing that matches the pop heaven of the first LP's title track, Find Ya Somewhere Else to Eat Your Crackers shares the same crunching rhythms and Pink Dally Rue those wonderfully daft lyrics. Henley applies his stratospheric tonsils and the boys their vocal harmonies to It's in His Kiss, Bye Bye Love, Thou Shalt Not Steal and Great Balls of Fire - which, sadly, isn't an explanation of why Henley's voice is so high. That said, after his sterling work with the Newbeats, Henley went on to write Wind Beneath My Wings. And, as his website proudly announces: "The vast spectrum of artists who have recorded the song gives testimony to its cultural magnitude."
Anybody brought up on the falsetto tones (and cultural magnitude) of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons should love this.

SOME BREAD AND BUTTER TO GO WITH YOUR BEEF
by Jo-Ann Greene
Finally, anyone with fond memories of The Newbeats (how can you not love "Bread And Butter"?) will thrill to Run Baby Run (Ace, U.K.), a bonus-stacked reissue of the group's third album, which in turn was titled for their fourth (and final) hit single. What a treasure trove it is, as The Newbeats look around the musical universe and grab favorite songs from every corner. The entire original album is comprised almost entirely of covers — The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, The Supremes, and The McCoys among them, and the band is having such a fine time recording them that the atmosphere cannot help but rub off on the listener. From a frenetic take on "Help" to a totally teed-off "Satisfaction" (with vocalist Larry Henley doing his best tantrum-throwing toddler impression) and on to a breezy "Little Child," you may have heard 'em all before but never like this. No fewer than 15 bonus tracks, tracing the last years of the group's career via a host of flop singles, wrap the set up, and it's to The Newbeats' credit that even their dog days sound fabulous. They may not have been especially innovative, but they're irresistible anyway — just like their biggest hit.

In 1964, the Newbeats were catapulted to worldwide fame by a
scrumptious rocker titled "Bread And Butter." The million-selling
single was packed with just the right crunch, tons of great taste and a
wholesome mix of musical satisfaction.
The Newbeats (falsetto singer Larry Henley, harmony vocalists /
brothers Dean and Marc Mathis) placed nine other singles and two albums
on Billboard's Pop charts through 1970.
Working with Nashville's best songwriters and studio musicians, the
Newbeats blended dramatic vocal interplay with rich emotional content.
They toured with major artists like the Rolling Stones and were even
scheduled to perform for President Nixon. As the
depth and variety of this collection proves, the Newbeats made a solid
and lasting contribution to modern popular music.

Dahl's Digs
by Bill Dahl
The falsetto shriek of Larry Henley defines the sound of The Newbeats, whose "Bread And Butter" blasted to #2 Pop while battling off the British Invasion. Varèse Sarabande's 18- song The Very Best Of The Newbeats leads with the trio's top seller for Nashville-based Hickory Records before segueing into "Everything's Alright," "Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms)" and "Shake Hands (And Come Out Crying)." The Newbeats
Bread & Butter - The Very Best Of
(Varese)
This fantastic comp celebrates the amazing Newbeats who are best known for the sublimely absurd title track which features Larry Henley's amazing falsetto perfectly utilized on one of the catchiest songs ever. It stands to reason that they would have a lot more good cuts. This CD unearths these gems, including "(The Bees Are For The Birds) The Birds Are For The Bees" and "Hey-O Daddy-O." There are some silly but superb songs here. When the tracks are more "serious," they are often pretty interesting. On "white" type records Henley is often singing music that seems to be meant for a woman. On the more "black" records that have either a sweet Chicago and or a Motown feel, he is more like a romantic man (and not the child from "Bread And Butter"). Most insane is that, according to the liner notes (written by a very dependable historian), Henley wrote "The Wind Beneath My Wings"! He must be a zillionaire from that, although if there was justice in this world, he would get $100,000 every month from the American Office of Culture for singing about enjoying toast and jam, and for the pain and suffering of catching his baby with another man.
THE NEWBEATS In 1964, the Newbeats were catapulted to worldwide fame by a
scrumptious rocker titled "Bread And Butter." The million-selling
single was packed with just the right crunch, tons of great taste and a
wholesome mix of musical satisfaction.
About a decade before "Bread And Butter," Georgians Dean and Marc
Mathis traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana and joined Paul Howard and the
Arkansas Cotton Pickers, a seminal western swing outfit. The Mathis
Brothers were soon touring with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. A
stint with rockabilly pioneer Dale Hawkins led to Dean and Marc solo
45s, including "Tell Him No," a #42 hit in 1959.
Texan Larry Henley first performed with the Dean and Marc Combo in
1962. Business links with Nashville-based Hickory Records owner Wesley
Rose rapidly led to solo releases by Larry Henley and also, Dean and
Marc.
In June 1964, Larry, Dean and Marc got together and cut an unusual,
falsetto-driven demo of the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love." The song's
composer, Bouldleaux Bryant, heard the dazzling demo and immediately
convinced Wesley Rose to sign the trio to a separate, (third!)
recording contract. Fred Foster, owner of Monument Records, suggested
the "Newbeats" name.
"Bye Bye Love," "Break Away (From That Boy)" (later a #34 hit in Cash
Box) and the Chevrolet Corvair tune "Tough Little Buggy" were duly
recorded on June 28, 1964. At the last minute Rose's brother-in-law
suggested a song called "Bread And Butter." Dean Mathis created a new,
authoritative arrangement on the spot, showcasing Larry Henley's
scorching, gospel-influenced falsetto.
When released, "Bread And Butter" was buried on the 'B' side of "Tough
Little Buggy." But DJs at Detroit's WKNR radio flipped the single
and "Bread And Butter" blasted onto the WKNR survey the week of July
16, 1964, soon peaking at #1. Nationally "Bread And Butter" shot to #2
and attained Gold sales.
The Newbeats' jaw-dropping national TV debut took place Wednesday, September 30,
1964 on ABC-TV's 'Shindig.' An appearance on 'American Bandstand' came
next. The group then stormed Europe via Holland's 'Grand Gala du Disque
1964,' a widely seen, four hour television spectacular.
In addition to "A Patent On Love" (originally intended for
Joey "Midnight Mary" Powers) and "Pink Dally Rue" (later recorded by
Jimmy Elledge and Robin Wilson), the 'Bread & Butter' album
included "Thou Shalt Not Steal," penned by longtime Hickory confederate
John D. Loudermilk ("Norman," "Talk Back Trembling Lips"). Dick and
Deedee recognized the potential of the album cut and soon lodged a
version of "Thou Shalt Not Steal" at #13 on the charts (Warner single 5482). Another Loudermilk tune, the #16 "Everything's Alright," became the
Newbeats' follow-up to "Bread And Butter."
From January 22 through February 13, 1965, the Newbeats toured
Australia and New Zealand with the Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison and Rolf
Harris. During the tour, Larry Henley became very close to Mick Jagger
and the two even planned an album project. Hickory owner Wesley Rose
managed tour headliner Roy Orbison. The Newbeats later recorded
Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Lookin' For Love."
"(The Bees Are For The Birds) The Birds Are For The Bees," was written
by the composers of "Bread And Butter," Larry Parks and Jay Turnbow,
with help from Bob Finnicum. While "Bread And Butter" had referred to
sex in sympathetic gastronomic terms, the refreshingly naïve "Birds Are
For The Bees" found Larry Henley (27), Dean Mathis (28) and Marc Mathis
(25) innocently claiming, "Grown-ups tell me the birds and the bees do
other things than live in trees" and concluding, to the astonishment of
angst-ridden teen listeners, "I don't care if they can fly it's got
nothing to do with you and I." Issued with two different front covers, the April 1965 album 'Big Beat Sounds' showcased the Newbeats' most recent single sides. The aforementioned Larry Parks, Jay Turnbow and Bob Finnicum contributed three additional quirky tunes to the album. 'Big Beat Sounds' also contained valuable material such as Goffin and King's lead-off cut "I Can't Hear You No More" and Keith Colley and Nancie Mantz's closer "Human Kindness."
Colley and Mantz had penned tunes for Rick Nelson ("That's All She Wrote"), Bobby Bare ("Talk Me Some Sense") and Skeeter Davis ("Ladder Of Success"). Nanci Mantz later co-wrote several songs for the Electric Prunes, including "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)."
The driving "Little Child" was released as a single in the summer of 1965. Oddly, it did not drive the national charts wild. But the group's publicity blitz continued unabated with appearances on ABC-TV's 'Where The Action Is' on July 20 and August 25, 1965.
The Newbeats scored a major comeback with the September 1965
single, "Run, Baby Run." The #12 hit boasted exquisite vocal harmonies
and a stomping Motown beat. And "Run, Baby Run" had legs; in 1971 it
went Top Ten in England. Roy Orbison and the Tremelos even cut versions
of the influential tune. November 1965 saw 'Run, Baby Run,' the Newbeats' third and final Hickory album. Remakes of the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart" and the Supremes' "Come See About Me" boldly demonstrated the influence of Motown soul while covers of "Help" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" recognized the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Hickory stalwart Doug Kershaw penned and contributed fiddle to the folk-
rocker "Shake Hands (And Come Out Crying)," a #62 charter in Cash Box.
Bolstered by a mid-1960s "Hey Joe" guitar riff, the relentless "Shake
Hands" evoked contemporary punk attitudes, thanks to Larry's sneering
delivery. Billboard January 10, 1970
Billboard October 18, 1969
Record World October 18, 1969
1969's "Groovin' (Out On Life)" makes its CD debut here. "Groovin'" was huge
in many regions, hitting, for example, #2 on KPOI in Honolulu, Hawaii
and #3 on KEYN in Wichita, Kansas. Jamaican singer Hopeton Lewis
recorded a successful version. And Reggae band UB40
resurrected "Groovin' (Out On Life)" on the 'Labour Of Love II' album. "Groovin' (Out On Life)" was penned for the Newbeats by Bobby Charles (Robert Charles Guidry). Louisiana R&B singer-songwriter Bobby Charles was well-known for his compositions "See You Later Alligator" (Bill Haley and His Comets), "Walking To New Orleans" (Fats Domino) and "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do" (Clarence 'Frogman' Henry).
The Newbeats' last single for Hickory was "Love Gets Sweeter" in May
1972. Buddah released "The Way You Do The Things You Do" in November
1973. The final Newbeats 45, "I Know (You Don't Want Me No More),"
appeared on Playboy Records in 1974.
Larry Henley produced several sides for his sister, Barbara
Mills: May 13, 1965 March 11, 1966
Dean Mathis and Gene Kennedy recorded a Newbeats sound-a-like
under the name Snoopy And The Others (Hickory 1432). The 'A' side was an extreme falsetto version of Nat Stuckey's "Sweet Thang" while the flip side, "You Better Take Me Home," echoed Gene Kennedy's own version which had appeared the previous year (Hickory 1314).
In 1963, Dean and Marc Mathis wrote "Walkin' My Baby" as interpreted by Allen Wayne (Doric, then Kapp 553, BB ad September 28, 1963), garage superstars the Trashmen ('B' side of "Whoa Dad!," Garrett 4012)
and Sue Thompson (Hickory single 45-1359, Variety review December 29, 1965).

Dale Hawkins' rockabilly classics "Cross Ties" and "Little Pig." In 1970, Dean
Mathis produced a few singles on Honor Brigade Records, including an
updated "You And Me And Happiness" by the First Street Marble Team.
Larry Henley, the 1983 Nashville Songwriters' Association International (NSAI) Songwriter Of The Year, has written many successful songs, including Janie Frickie's #1 Country hit "He's A Heartache (Lookin' For A Place To Happen)," Randy Travis' "Is It Still Over" and Tanya Tucker's "Lizzie And The Rainman."
Larry's most famous composition is the Grammy, ACM and CMA award-winning standard "The Wind Beneath My Wings" as recorded by Bette Midler, Lou Rawls, Gary Morris, Menage and countless others. "The Wind Beneath My Wings" received a BMI Million-Airs award, celebrating Five Million plays on radio air-waves. It was BMI's #41 song of the 20th century.
After the Newbeats, Larry Henley released solo material on Atco, Viking, Capricorn and Epic records. In 2002, Larry Henley returned to recording, issuing 'Original Copy Volume One' with assistance from Bruce Channel ("Hey Baby") and Ricky Ray Rector.
The 'Original Copy' album is dedicated to Don Gant, who passed away in March 1987 at the age of 44. Gant was affectionately referred to as the "fourth Newbeat." He co-wrote "Run, Baby Run" and "Pink Dally Rue" and often handled production and arrangement chores for the Newbeats.
But the Newbeats will always be remembered for "Bread And Butter." The
savory song has been used in TV commercials for Applebee's restaurants,
Sunbeam Bread, Quaker Rice Cakes and Friskies Cat Food. In 1991-92, it
served as the theme for the ABC-TV series 'Baby Talk.'
A Newbeats' re-recording of "Bread And Butter" appeared in the 1986
film '9½ Weeks,' allegedly without authorization. Consequently, techno
pioneers Devo performed the song on the '9½ Weeks' Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album:
BREAD AND BUTTER [2:25]
The original Newbeats' hit rendering later appeared on the 1998 'Simon
Birch' film soundtrack.
The Newbeats continue to delight and amaze listeners of all ages. Turn
up the volume! More than forty years later, the blissful "Bread And
Butter" still tastes good!
