The Aurania was launched on February 6, 1924 and completed on September 6, 1924. She made her maiden voyage on September 13, 1924 from Liverpool to New York. In 1925 she was transferred to the Liverpool-Quebec-Montreal route. She served this route until 1928 when she was put on the London to Montreal service. On August 24, 1939 she was fitted out as an armed merchant cruiser. In July 1941 the Aurania collided with an iceberg in convoy between Iceland and Halifax but without serious damage. In October 1941 she was torpedoed but reached Rothesay safely. On March 9, 1942 she was sold to British Admiralty and converted to a repair ship. She was renamed HMS Artifex. In 1944 she entered service as HMS Artifex. In January 1961 she was sold to be broken up at La Spezia.
