Daniel Curtin, would have had no idea, as he went about his work as a Cork City Merchant in the 1750's, that one day his great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter, Diana would marry Royalty and become a Princess. Lady Diana Frances Spencer was born at Park House, Sandringham, Norfolk, England on July 1st, 1961. She was the 4th child of Edward John Spencer, the Viscount Athorp, 8th Earl of Spencer, and his wife The Honourable Frances Ruth Burke. |
Frances and Edward (known as Johnny), were married in Westminster Abbey, London on 1st June 1954. Diana had 2 older sisters and a brother who died at birth, and a younger brother. Diana married His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, the son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on 29 July 1981 in St Paul's Cathedral, London. They had 2 sons - Prince William Arthur Philip Louis on 21 June 1982 and Prince Henry Charles Albert David born 15 September 1984 at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. Charles and Diana divorced on 28 August 1996 and sadly Diana, died from injuries sustained in a car crash in Paris, France on 31 August 1997. She was buried on the Althorp Estate on 6 September 1997. This lady was a true humanitarian, and tireless worker for charities. She loved children and was always giving firm handshakes or hugs to people she met. |
Let's look at how the Curtin ancestry comes into her lineage. Without male heirs, it did die out prior to the Tithe of the 1820's but certain aspects were recorded in old documents pertaining to Nagle's, and Burke's. Daniel Curtin A Merchant in Cork. We do not know when he was born but he died 6th March 1786 and is buried at Rockvale, in Co Cork. He married Margaret Nagle, daughter, & 5th child, of David James Nagle, of Carrigon & Ballygriffin, and his wife Miss Lombard of Cork City & Lombardstown, Co Cork. Margaret was known as Peggy and she died around about 1798. Daniel and Margaret had only 2 children - William in 1757 and Catherine on 28 May 1759. Margaret Nagle was a cousin to the Right Honourable Edmund Burke, MP, celebrated author & writer 1729-1797. William Curtain born 1757 died 1785 was a Merchant also, and married Margaret Deasy, a daughter of Timothy Deasy and Honoria O'Donovan of Timoleague, Co Cork on 24 May, 1785. Margaret was born about 1761 and died on 18th March, 1847. Their only child was Margaret Honoria Curtain born 1786 in Co Cork. Margaret Honoria Curtain married Edward Roche born 13 July 1771 son of Edmond Roche of Kildinan and Frances Coghlan of Ardoe, Co. Waterford in 1805. They lived at Trabolgan, near Whitegate, Co Cork. Edward died in March 1855 and Margaret passed away on 1862. They had a son and a daughter. Their son Edmond Burke ROCHE born August 1815, inherited the Roche farm at Trabolgan in 1855. He was the MP for Cork 1837 to 1855 and was conferred with a Barony in 1856 - 1st Baron Fermoy, by Queen Victoria. He was the MP for Marylebone, England from 1855 to 1869. Edmund married Eliza Caroline Boothby on 22 August 1848, she being the daughter of James Brownwell Boothby of Twyford Abbey, Middlesex, England. Eliza was born 1821 and died 26 April 1897. Edmund died 17 September, 1874 and is buried at Corkbeg. The farm Trabolgan was sold about 1880. This Roche family had 9 children born between May, 1850 and September, 1864. Their 2nd child was James Boothby Burke Roche and he was born 28 July 1851. He was the 3rd Baron Fermoy and died on 31 October 1920. Her married Frances Ellen Work, born New York, USA in 1857, daughter of Frank Work & Ellen Wood in the early 1880's. Their son Edmund Maurice Burke ROCHE was the 4th Baron Fermoy born 1885 and died 1955. He married Ruth Sylvia Gill, born 1908 daughter of Colonel William Smith Gill and Ruth Littlejohn of Dalheibuty, Bieldside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Ruth was a noted Pianist in her day and she died in the 1990's. Edmund and Ruth had 2 children, a son who became the 5th Baron Fermoy and a daughter, Frances. The Honourable Frances Ruth Roche was born in 1936. Frances married Edward John Spencer in 1954 and had 5 children. The Spencer's divorced in 1969 and both re-married.
