Rei Ayenami (1st Child)    

Rei Ayenami is the pilot of Eva unit 00. Already a pilot when Shinji arrives, she was hospitalised after a test with her Eva went wrong. Rei is a quiet girl and keeps to herself, she has trouble expressing her feelings. Rei is a clone of Shinji's mother and the Angel known as Lillith. 

    Shinji Ikari (3rd Child)

Shinji is the main character of the series. Shinji was abandoned by his father when Yui, his mother, died. Shinji pilots Eva unit 01 and lives in the apartment of Misato Katsuragi. Shinji has developed a sort of self sufficiency and can be independent, but he doesn't like piloting the Eva.

Asuka Langely Soryu (2nd Child)   

Asuka is the pilot of Eva unit 02. Hot headed and ill-tempered, Asuka hates being second at anything and always tries to be the best. Asuka comes into the series from America, although she knows fluent German and has graduated from college. She moves into Misato's apartment when she and Shinji have to a synchronized attack on an Angel.

    Misato  Katsuragi (Head of Operations)

Misato Katsuragi is the main tactician of Nerv, she is in charge of the Eva pilots and the way that they dispatch enemies. Misato has an obscure pet 'warm water' penguin called Pen-Pen. Misato was the only survivor of the second impact and becomes the guardians of Shinji and Asuka.

Gendo Ikari (Head of Nerv)   

Gendo Ikari is the head of Nerv and the father of Shinji Ikari. Gendo knows all of Nerv's dark secrets and answers to a secret organisation called Seele. Gendo is the one who chose Shinji to be an Eva pilot and has a strange friendship with Rei which makes Shinji suspicious.

    EVANGELION

Evangelions are giant robotic life forms, each with a mind of it's own. Usually it has to have a pilot to control it, but sometimes Unit 01 has been known to move by itself, and without any energy supply. Evangelions have to have an external cable  hooked into their backs to be able to function but can move for 5 minutes with it's reserve supply. The outer armour that protects the Eva also doubles for restraints that won't let it go berserk, although sometimes even the restraints can't stop the Eva.
