My McCracken ancestors left Scotland for Ireland and eventually migrated to America.  On this voyage, James McCracken was born.  The exact date of his birth is not known, but it was anywhere between 1750 to 1753.  His family settled in Cumberland County,Pennsylvania.  James then later moved his wife and children to Bald Eagle Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and at the urging of his brother in law, Arthur Bell, moved into Clearfield County, near the town of Curwensville.  He lived on the banks of the Susquehanna river, near the breast of the Curwensville dam where he purchased 400 acres.  He later relocated to where the town of Bloomington, now stands.  James and his wife Rebecca were the parents of 12 children.
James also served in the Revolutionary War in the Cumberland County Malitia.  He was called to duty on August 1, 1780, in the 5th Battalion, 2nd Company, 6th Class, the company was commanded by Capt. Samuel Lemmon.  In 1782, he served in Capt. Thomas Askey's Company of the 6th Battalion.
So come along with me on my journey back in time  there may be a treasure to find  and a missing link. I sure hope you are blessed with this information.  Also, if you have any questions, please email me.

The purpose of this page is to outline my lineage to James Sr.  Page 2 goes into more detail of James and Sarah's other children.  Also, I have devoted a page to my gg-grandfather Philip McCracken.

My grandfather
Daniel was a talented carpenter, his trade  most of his life and also he also played the fiddle quite well.  This musical ability was passed down to my mother who could play ragtime piano and never took a lesson.   I never knew either of my grandparents but family has told me that my grandmother Edna was a kind loving woman and had the qualities of a wonderful mother.   Dying at a very young age, her children were raised by her mother Clara, who was called by the family, (Mom Mom)  and I had the pleasure of knowing her until she passed on when I was 18 yrs old.   Searching to put together the puzzle of my mother's past is the reason I started my research  and I have ventured further into other branches of the family.  There is more to come, I hope you keep checking back to see what's new.  Happy Hunting fellow researchers.

PHILIP McCRACKEN
The McCracken family is one of the most numerous in Clearfield county, and is largely connnected with many other families by marriage.  It is claimed by observers that there are but few native Clearfield countains who are not related to McCrackens, Blooms or Straws, and they are largely inter-related by marriages.  The McCrackens have mostly been industrious people, having assisted very materially in the development of the resources of the county.
The early members of the family were large, strong muscularly built men and well adapted to withstand the hardships attenuated by pioneering and lumbering.  They were among the very earliest of the white settlers who came into what is now Clearfield county.  The progenitor of the McCracken family was James McCracken, Sr.

RETURN TO GENEALOGY INDEX
My McCracken research is dedicated to my mother who passed away in the year, 2001.    It was because of her background that I got into doing genealogy and it bloomed.  She knew very little about her ancestors, it was my gift to her.........(Dancenshout)
