In her story about the reformers of the Hopedale Community, Anna Thwing Field mentions a family of four escaped slaves who lived in "the house opposite." That would seem to be the one in the picture above. It would have been about where the driveway into the medical building parking lot next to the Bancroft Library is now. According to Anna, they "dwelt one winter in the cellar kitchen and one summer in the attic." Houses were often moved years ago. This house may still be somewhere near the center of Hopedale.
