CNN Heroes

Those of you who lived in Hopedale in the mid-twentieth century probably remember the Farrells, who lived on the corner of Dutcher and Dennett streets. Mrs. Farrell taught third grade at Park Street School. I remember Mr. Farrell being the cubmaster, back when pack meetings were held in the Town Hall. They had a son, Dick, who was in Hopedale recently for his class's fiftieth reunion, and a daughter, Marion. Marion's daughter, Liz, is a finalist as a CNN Hero. Here's what the CNN website has to say about her.

Liz McCartney is dedicated to helping Hurricane Katrina survivors in St. Bernard Parish, a community just outside New Orleans. Her nonprofit St. Bernard Project has rebuilt the homes of more than 120 families.

And more, below.

Today CNN announced that 10 "Super Heroes" have been chosen from the original
group of 100 CNN Heroes for 2008 and Liz McCartney is one of the ten. CNN's
Anderson Cooper announced the 10 honorees Thursday on "American Morning.(See the

"A panel made up of world leaders and luminaries recognized for their own
dedication to public service selected the Top Ten. The Blue Ribbon Panel

Kristi Yamaguchi and Deepak Chopra. Each of this year's Top 10 CNN Heroes will
receive $25,000 and will be honored at "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," airing
from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on November 27.

Hosted by Cooper, the Thanksgiving night broadcast will culminate with the
announcement of the CNN Hero of the Year, selected by the public in an online
poll that begins Thursday morning.

Continuing through November 19, viewers can log on to CNN.com/Heroes to
participate in the poll. The person receiving the most votes will receive an
additional $100,000."
