While in my kayak on Hopedale Pond on the evening of July 31, 2007, I noticed quite a bit of splashing up ahead of me. When I got closer I saw that it was two snapping turtles. Fighting??? Mating??? I didn't know, but I stayed by them for about a half hour while the activity continued. Most of the time I was no more than a foot or two from them. After I got home, I checked a webpage on snappers. It said that mating season runs from April to November and that males sometimes fight. From what I read and what I saw, Id say that what was going on was fighting, but maybe I'll hear differently from someone who knows more about turtles than I do.They were still at it when I left.
