This is ground ivy, also known as gill-over-the-ground. It's very common in lawns (that's my lawn in the pictures) and is often weeded from gardens. According to the Audibon wildflower book, the word gill comes from a French word for "ferment." The leaves were once used to ferment or flavor beer.
