This is rough-fruited cinquefoil, also known as sulfur cinquefoil. It's a member of the rose family. I took the picture at the top about a hundred yards west of the Rustic Bridge on July 8, 2006. I had seen it a month or so earlier but didn't have my camera with me. I passed by several more times but it wasn't flowering and I thought I'd have to wait a year to get a picture. Then on July 8, I found it flowering there again. The lower two pictures were taken on July 16, 2006, near Freedom Street, just a little west of the railroad crossing. In the midwestern U.S. it's a serious rangeland weed. Cattle seldom eat it and it can become invasive.                  Wildflower Menu         Next           HOME
