From Pylons To Pigeons |
2003 - Domain Names and Updates By 2003, The Pylon Cafe was a thriving multi-million pound website, and Salter was constantly having to keep Bill Gates off his back. Microsoft were determined to shut the Cafe down as they feared that the success of The Cafe was making the rest of the Internet largely redundant. One nice feature of the Cafe during this period was that the website now had it's own domain name. The website address was now pyloncafe.co.uk, a domain name OWNED by Salter at vast personal expense. (Well, I think it was about £15. Which interestingly, is the only money that has ever been spent on this site EVER. I got a bit drunk one night and I had a Visa and well, you know.....it was actually Darren Rea's fault for suggesting it in the first place.) Tons of features and updates were made during 2003, largely because Salter was now unemployed and had too much time on his hands. Some of them were short-lived (an early attempt to give the viewers a new Forum, a Chat Room, an e-mail Newsletter, a RoundTable thing which even I'd forgotten about until just now) but most of them are still on the website today, even if some of them have been relegated to The Archives. I'll tell you something now, I'm not sure if it's just the fine wine kicking in, but this feature has been a swine to do, it's no fucking wonder I don't update the site much anymore. Christ, what a pain in the arse. It's like trying to paint a bedroom with your own spit. Jesus. Last time I do anything like this. |
Pigeon Loft Memories "I remember that on the night before we were due to go over the top, we all came into the Pylon Cafe to drink with our chums for what could be the last time. It was a fantastic evening. The only thing that ruined it was that the next day we did go over the top. Little Pipkin bought it straight away - one of Gerries bullets blew half his face clean off. Pieman Cutler also bled to death before he'd even gone 50 paces - and him with a new wife and small child on the way.... Hang on a sec. These aren't memories of the Pylon Cafe are they? That's the War isn't it? Darren Rea, Devon |

2004 - From Pylons to Pigeons 2004 was a year of big change for the website because it got a different name and everything! Towards the end of the year, the domain name expired and Salter (now a homeless tramp, roaming the streets of Rotherham for fag-ends) couldn't afford to renew it. But when he sat down on a bench in Clifton Park and thought about it, he decided he was fed up of the Pylon theme anyway. So, the whole site was re-branded as Salter's Travelling Pigeon Loft, a much broader name which encompasses a whole canvas of ideas. At least that's what he thought at the time, as he was being bummed for money by somebody at Rotherham Council. The name change caused much confusion for the simpletons, some of whom still refer to the site as The Pylon Cafe today. Just to be clear though, it's the same website as before, just with a different, non-Pylon related name. I was sick to death of people sending me their pictures of bloody Pylons, thinking that I might, for a moment, be at all interested. |

2005 - Treeton Towers and Beyond You know, I feel that 2005 was the year that the new Pigeon Loft was fully embraced by the general public, even if they did sometimes refer to it as Cuckoo's Nest, which was the new name for The Forum, not the site. Are these things so hard to understand? Really? Salter spent much of his time in 2005 beavering away on his new innovative game The Secret of Treeton Towers. I'm not kidding, this took fucking ages and was dead complicated and yet I was so proud of the fantastic results. It was the game of 2005. It was meant to be the first of many free games available to download at The Pigeon Loft but it turned out to be the last, because homosexual XP users couldn't get it to run. Well, no, some of them could, just not all of them. Never mind. Salter also had another stab at re-inventing The Forum, but the peasants just weren't having it, and began rioting until the old Forum was re-instated. They probably had a point though, there is something nice and comforting and user-friendly about the Bravenet Forum, even if you can't say Fuck in there. So all that was another waste of time. Hmmm. I see a pattern forming here. So, what's in store for 2006? Absolutely bugger all. Sorry. |
Special Thanks to Alex Sotheran who was there right from the very beginning, and hardly ever complained. Wait a minute........ |
