Little does they know a banned ex-member of the group, called Sandmanz, start to kill them one by one. The result is Bloody Beach, a gore-fest.

PLOT

Do-yeon (Kim min-sun) received an email that invites her to attend the first off-line gathering of her chatting group in a beach house. By a train she’s go to Sangju city, where the beach are. She isn’t notice when the train has stop, because she’s in the toilet and hearing her walkman loudly. When she eventually realized that she has arrived, the train has been sealed by a mysterious figure. Frantically, she tries to go out the train, but all she finds is this assailant that stabs her through her neck!

Meanwhile the rest member of the group has gather and goes to the beach house. They are the beautiful Nam-kyeong (Kim Hyun-jung), the leading Won-il (Lee Hyun-kyun), the vixen Yu-na (Lee Seung-Chae), the nerd typical Jae-seung (Yang Dong-kun), the shy girl Young-woo (Lee Se-Eun), the bleaching blonde guy Jeong-min (Jin Tae-Sung) and the charming Sang-tae (Lee Chul-jin).

Even they wonder about the absence of Do-yeon, but they carry on to their plan to get to know each other further and (off-course) to have some fun. That day they spend most of they time with swimming, cheering and so on. All of them are in the prelude of joy except Nam-kyeong which is look a little uncomforted. She’s keep reminding about Sandmanz, the banned member of the group. Sandmanz ousted because he seem became more irritating and annoying to them, especially with Nam-kyeong, because Sandmanz seem have a crush with her. But Nam-kyeong rejects him since the malevolence act of Sandmanz did. The result is Sandmanz seem to committed a gruesome suicide.

Things getting awkward to Nak-kyeong when she have a little accident when she’s go diving with Won-ill and she also have a nightmarish dream when she’s do a sand sleep. But she’s calmed her emotion and tries to enjoy their plan.

When the night came, they seat around a campfire. The cheering game they play turn in to a tongue-tied situation when Jae-sung raise the topic of Sandmanz. They became anxious by the topic and start arguing each other. For some of them, what happened to Sandmanz is worth for him, but in Jae-sung’s opinion what they did to Sandmanz is wrong even Sandmanz doesn’t have a good profile.

Nam-kyeong is getting uneasy with the situation and decides to be alone in the beach to compose her self. Sang-tae comes after her and tells Nam-kyeong to forget for what ever happened. But Nam-kyeong seem can’t handle it well. Feel dejected, Sang-tae leaves Nam-kyeong alone.

In the other part, Yu-na and Jeong-min have their own plan. They drove their car in to the wood and start to making out. When they have finished their business, Jeong-min takes a pee and Yu-na leaves alone in the car. Suddenly Jeong-min hears something and decides to investigate it. In the car, a mysterious figure enters in the back seat. In first, Yu-na thinks it’s only Jeong-min try to make prank with her. But when she notices through the rearview mirror, she knows it isn’t Jeong-min like she thought, and aware what is happening; even less the assailant tries to stab her with a sharp knife. Hysterically, she tries to get out from the car, but the killer manages to stab her feet. She able to get out from the car though and crawling out try to escape from the killer. She fined the dead body of Jeong-min and before she can do any further, the killer stabs her precisely in the middle of her head.

When Nam-kyeong walks back to the house, she hears the loud scream of Yu-na. She rushes her walk then as she’s so frightening. When she arrives in the house, she tells her friends for what she just heard. They seem to believe to Nam-kyeong, but not with Jae-sung. However, they decide to check it instead albeit they find nothing and they  decide to goes back into the house eventually.

Feel disturb, Nam-kyeong then find that the email is send from the computer inside the house and it means one of them is the Sandmanz. The only way to prove it, all of them must check their email and the one who hasn’t got mailed the threatening e-mail is the Sandmanz. One by one they check their email then and it appears that they all get that harsh email from the Sandmanz. When it turns to Jae-sung to check his email, he looks reluctantly to check it. Because of this they think Jae-sung is the Sandmanz. They tied him up and lock him in the room.
At the same time as  they decide what they got to do with him, he manages to escape. When they eventually know this, Won-ill and Sang-tae try to look upon him and Nam-kyeong and Young-Woo are stay in the house. Suddenly the phone is ringing. Nam-kyeong picks it up and obviously it from Jae-sung. Jae-sung admits that he the one who sending them that harsh email, but he isn’t admitting if he is the Sandmanz. He even don’t know who Sandmanz is really are. To prove his word he even gives Nam-kyeong his password to check his email. Jae-sung disconnect the phone, and little he does, the killer is stalking him. Wielding a hedge-clipper, the killer cuts Jae-sung’s finger and when Jae-sung scream in agony, the killer chopped his head out.

Back into the house, Nam-kyeong and Young Woo goes check Jae-sung email. And they find this email that attached by the gruesome picture of Jae-sung dead body. Nam-kyeong knows now that Jae-sung is not the killer. But who is he? Is he one of them? And why Sandmanz is so angry with them? This question is revolving around her head, when it seems dead itself now is chasing her and the rest of them!

COMMENT

Bloody Beach a.k.a. Haebyeoneuro Gada is the Korean attempt to make a decent slasher movie. The result is seemed quite well. Although Bloody Beach comes in the post-Scream era but the director seem very influence by the 80’s slasher flick. There’s many reference from that era and that makes Bloody Beach as a fine combination of 90’s and 80’ flick. Actually, there’s nothing new here and there’s routine and cliché, and the plot holes is quite abundance, but since this is a splatter gem, we can’t complaint.

As a Korean movie, Bloody Beach also has a bit different approaching in the story line rather than the American counterpart. The dramatic tense is build well. However I must warn you, because the pace is slow-moving, especially in the first half. But after the second killing, the pace move tolerable and able to build the fright rhythms it needs. The gores are somewhat strong and still in the cheesy concept but it nicely blend and make me do not much complaint of it.

If you like a slasher with different ambience, you should check this. An Asian splatter is definitely rare to find, especially the nice one.
