Press Release: New Zealand Alliance Party Date: Friday, 24 October 1997 Time: 2:42 pm NZT Time to stand up and be counted at CHOGM It is time for tougher measures against Nigeria, which has made little progress on human rights since the brutal hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa said Alliance Co-Deputy Leader, and Green Party Co-Leader, Jeanette Fitzsimons. "The Prime Minister's spineless response, backtracking furiously over the last 2 years, is extremely disappointing. "The do-nothing stance which is likely to be put forward at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in a few days is a denial of the continued human rights abuses and the failure of Nigeria to reach acceptable "benchmarks" on democracy. "The military regime of General Sani Abacha is violent and oppressive, and must be given a firm message from Commonwealth leaders that murder, torture and imprisonment without trial, will not be tolerated. The wait and see politics of the member nations is an affront to the democratic principles on which the Commonwealth was founded. "It is absolutely appropriate for New Zealand to make a commitment to the people of Nigeria in an act of respect to the memory of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni 9. The Prime Minister must show some initiative on this if the word of the Commonwealth is to mean anything. "Military support for General Abacha is quite clearly outside the realms of democracy. A recent statement from the Nigerian army declared that General Abacha would retain the support of the military if he chose to seek election as a civilian in the October 1998 election. This is a clear statement that military rule will continue in what ever guise the General chooses to adopt. "Mr Bolger has an opportunity to speak out on behalf of the oppressed and the violated, and should make it clear that New Zealand will not sanction the current regime in Nigeria," said Ms Fitzsimons.
Questions Of The Day (7-12)
9. Jeanette Fitzsimons to the Minister of Energy, Max Bradford.
Q: Has he had meetings with privately owned companies to discuss the possible purchase of ECNZ after it is split up?
A. No. This coalition government has no intention of selling ECNZ or Contact Energy to anyone.
8. Jeanette Fitzsimons to the Minister of Conservation, Nick Smith.
Q. As a result of the Court of Appeal decision yesterday on
the interpretation of the West Coast Accord, does he see new opportunities to protect important habitat for kiwi, kaka and
kakariki on the West Coast?
A. I have only just received the decision this afternoon, my advice is that it shows the Government's action and Timberlands
has been lawful. Need more information on the ecological worth of the unprotected sites still in question before we decide
on the future of Timberland's operations in the areas in question.
