Well, in my opinion this was a surprisingly good year, either that or I'm getting too soft in my reviewing. I've had a lot of trouble picking my worst films, because I've been dissapointed by a few films, but haven't seen a genuinely bad one at the cinema this year, mainly because I avoid anything that is bound to be awful. Anyway, I can't see every film, so if you find any omissions that you are shocked by, chances are that I haven't actually seen them - just look in my reviews. If you have your own thoughts then email me at dave_or_did@yahoo.com, or post them on the guestbook. Oh, also, as a side note, please bear in mind I have classed these films as coming from 2003 because I personally have seen them on cinema this year, so some might seem out of place (e.g. American Splendor and Bowling For Columbine didn't come out in 2003 in England). |
Review of 2003 |
The Best 1. LOTR - The Return of the King: Epic filmmaking at its best 2. Kill Bill: Ludicrously entertaining and very cool 3. Bowling For Columbine: One sided maybe, but potent nonetheless 4. Roger Dodger: Dark, witty and emotionally powerful 5. Spirited Away: Beautifully imaginative fantasy 6. Belleville Rendez-Vouz: Quirky, bizaare animated genius 7. Finding Nemo: Hugely enjoyable animated adventure 8. American Splendor: Highly original and well crafted biopic 9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Swashbuckling entertainment 10. Buffalo Soldiers: Blackly comic satire |
Plus, films just brimming under : Catch Me If You Can, Intolerable Cruelty, Hulk, Master and Commander. |
The Worst (ok so they're not that bad, but I wasn't that bothered about them) 1. Love Actually (its entertaining, but the multiple plots feel manipulative and weaken their impact) 2. Bruce Almighty (starts off very well, but degenerates into schmaltz) |
The Dissapointments (Where I expected more) Once Upon a Time in Mexico (fun in places, but just a big mess overall) Matrix Reloaded (too much wordy cod philosophy for my liking) Matrix Revolutions (too conventional and cheesy) X2 (its a good film but still not the superhero extravaganza it could be) |
Top Ten BO of the Year (US Grosses) 1. LOTR: The Return of the King * 2. Finding Nemo 3. Pirates of the Caribbean * 4. The Matrix Reloaded 5. Bruce Almighty 6. X2 7. Elf * 8. Chicago 9. Terminator 3 10. Cheaper by the Dozen * (* still on release, based on projected grosses) |
