E! Online - David Letterman Article Letterman announced Tuesday on CBS' Late Show that gal-pal Regina Lasko delivered a baby boy just before midnight Monday. The tyke tipped the scales at 9 pounds, 11 ounces and is 21 inches long. "I could never imagine ever being a part of something that turned out this beautiful," Letterman said, per a CBS-issued Late Show transcript. The show is taped in the afternoons. The baby, a first for both Letterman and Lasko, is named Harry, after Letterman's late father, Harry Joseph Letterman, who died at 57. "So God bless Dad and God bless Harry," Letterman said. It didn't take long, though, for the proud papa to start cracking baby jokes. "I don't know, maybe I shouldn't have done this. First thing I took him home and dangled him over the balcony." He also counted down the Top 10 Reasons Why I Am Excited to Be a Father. At number one: "There is now tangible evidence that I have had sex." The devoted dad-to-be skipped work Monday night to be by Lasko's side as she went into labor. Bandleader Paul Shaffer filled in for his boss Monday night, telling the audience, "If you're feeling that there's something wrong with this picture--you're seeing me--because Dave is at the hospital waiting for his baby to be delivered!" Little Harry made his grand entrance at 11:58 p.m. ET. Lasko's location was not disclosed. Letterman is a Connecticut resident. It was in September that after the gap-toothed funny guy broke the baby news on his program, admitting he was just a tad nervous about becoming a first-time dad. "Here I am, 56, and by all rights it shouldn't be happening," he said at the time. "But, there's nothing we can do about it now. And I'm terribly excited about this. I'm scared silly about this." The longtime bachelor--he was divorced from his first wife in 1977--even copped on air to considering marriage, telling Lasko's parents, his potential in-laws, that the "wedding is still being discussed." Lasko, a former production manager for Saturday Night Live, and Letterman have reportedly been dating for years but have managed to keep their relationship on the down low until now. |
