New York Daily News - David Letterman Article Get ready for the baby-cam, David Letterman fans. The terribly funny, often cranky late-night host is going to be a daddy. During yesterday's taping of tonight's show, the 56-year-old CBS talk-show host told the audience that his long-time love, Regina Lasko, was pregnant, The Daily News' Richard Huff reports. "I have something to tell you all," Letterman said. "I'm going to be a father." The 400-plus members of the "Late Show" studio audience at the Ed Sullivan Theater went wild. Letterman, a divorced, fast-driving, perennial bachelor, said Lasko, who's in her early 40s, was getting so big "there's some tunnels we can't get through any more." He also joked that he was scared to death and hadn't yet figured out where the little one would sleep in his Connecticut home. Likewise, because of his, um, advanced age, Letterman quipped that he'd have the dual role of father and grandfather. Letterman, who in the past couple of years has undergone a quadruple bypass and suffered a bout of shingles, admitted during the taping that fatherhood was something he'd been thinking about for the past six or seven months. He also joked he had a special message to Lasko's parents: A wedding is under discussion. "If this doesn't soften you up, nothing will," joked bandleader Paul Shaffer. Cuba Gooding Jr., Letterman's first guest on the show, bounded on- stage and handed the host a cigar. "Life is over as you know it," Gooding said. "I'm serious, man, I got two boys. If you have a girl, maybe good luck to you." Letterman gave no clue as to when the infant is due. |
