Creature Name. | Creature Desription. |
G | |
Gap Dragon | One of the most formidable monsters of Xanth so I figure he gets his own listing. He is low-slung, with a triple pair of legs, and iridescent metallic scales. Though he has small wings, he is landbound, and travels by whomping along. He destroys all creatures unfortunate enough to blunder into the Gap. Accidentally youthened to baby status, he was befriended by Ivy, who named him Stanley, because he is a steamer. During his second youth, his female counterpart, Stacey or Stella Steamer, patrols the Gap. |
Gerrymander | A creature with an irregularly sinuous body, small wings, claws, tail, and a lizard head. It repeats: I convolute, I divide, I conquer, I surround, I select, I cover whatever territory I need to hold power! And it does. This monster also flourishes in Mundania, where it deprives common folk of their part of government. |
Gnomes | Humanoid folk a third the height of human beings, who reside underground and mine for gems. The males are surly, but the females, called gnomides, are nice. |
Goblins | Goblins are ugly
humanoids half the height of a man, with large hands and
feet. Their heads are as hard as stone, so it is
impossible to hurt one by hiting it on the head, but
their hands and feet are very soft. The goblins blame the
harpies for blighting the sight of the female goblins so
they were only attracted to the weak and ugly males.
Goblins claim they used to be the handsomest, smartest,
and bravest of all the half-human races. But because of
the harpy curse, in the long run only the goblin wimps
were able to find wives, so there is nothing left in the
goblin caves but beautiful females and ugly males. Related to elves, gnomes and such, and of modified human stock, goblin males are ugly and mean-spirited, while the females are lovely and sweet. Goblins once ruled much of Xanth, but a spell that caused the females to prefer the worst males caused them to decline in power over the centuries, and today they exist mainly underground or in mountain warrens. Their war with the harpies almost ruined the construction of Castle Roogna. |
Golem | A construction of inanimate objects animated for a purpose. Grundy the Golem is an example. |
Gorgon | The personification of the promise/threat in woman. When she was young, the sight of her face stoned males; when she matured, her face stoned everyone, even animals. Sister to the Siren. Intrigued by Good Magician Humfrey, who made her face invisible so she could not accidently hurt others, she finally married him and had a son, Hugo. |
Griffins | One of the classier monsters, a griffin has the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. Theres hardly a better fighting animal, weight for weight, other than a dragon or an ogre. They are notoriously finicky, spending hours preening their feathers, and wont eat anything thats spoiled. |
H | |
Half Men | Human animal crossbreeds, including centaurs, merfolk, Fauns, Nymphs, sphinxes, harpies, manticoras, werewolves, and the Horseman. In Xanth such crossbreeding is acceptable and at times unavoidable, facilitated by unmarked love springs. |
Hamadryad | A tree Nymph. They inhabit and protect various trees in Xanth, and some in Mundania, though they are invisible and relatively powerless there. |
Hand-Ball | A ball formed of all manners of hands. |
Harpies | Harpies have the
heads and breasts of women; and great greasy bodies, wings
and short ugly legs of vultures. They come from the
love-spring cross of a human and a vulture, though
history does not record which sex was which species. They
can fly, and their talons are sharp but chipped and
stained from lack of personal care. Most harpies are ugly
and dirty, but the youngest females are beautiful and
clean. It is only after decades of bitter and abusive
spinsterhood that they begin to neglect themselves. Male
harpies are rare and when no male harpies are hatched,
the females propagate by mating alternate generations
with men and with vultures. The few male harpies are
considered to be princes. Harpies prefer the taste of
meat, and will eat the entrails of humans if they can.
They live in grimy holes dibbled into the sides of
cliffs, and use their dung for building. They save
unhatched eggs as weapons, for harpie eggs explode in an
unbeliveable stench, and spray mess all over the
landscape. Human/Vulture crossbreeds: dirty birds with the head and breasts of women, and bodies of vultures. Most of them are raucous, ill-tempered, ugly old hens, but a few are young and nice, like Heavenly Helen. They have a centuries-long running feud with the goblins, because the goblin-girls lured the few male harpies away with their attractive legs. In return, the harpies put a spell on the goblins to make their women prefer bad men. This feud caused the power of both goblins and harpies to decline in Xanth, which was fortunate for the human folk. |
Hephalumph | An elephantine creature inspired by one in the Winnie the Pooh series. |
Hippocampus | A monster with the head and forefeet of a horse and tail of a dolphin. |
Hippogryph | A monster with the forepart of a griffin and body of a horse. It has golden feathers and a yellow tail. i.e. Xap, Chexs sire, and Xaviers steed. |
Holey Cow | A big cow with a bumpy gait, as full of holes as any big cheese. |
Hoorah Bird | Derived from Hoorahs nest a hodgepodge. A huge bird with bright but tasteless plumage, with patches of red, blue, yellow on the wings; a brown tail speckled with white, and a body streaked with shades of green. It collects things. When it spots something interesting, it cries Hoo-Rah! |
Horses | There are really no true horses in Xanth, but a number of equine crossbreeds or variants, like sea horses, horseflies, centaurs, hippogryphs, unicorns, pookas (ghost horses), night mares, and day mares. |
House fly | A flying house. |
Hydra | A water dragon with a number of heads. When one is cut off, two more grow in its place |
Hypotenuse | A big, fat monster associated with triangles. |
I | |
Imps | Very small humanoid creatures responsible for lenses for sunbeams and sparkles for morning dew. But the items work only once. The imps call it planned obsolescence. |
Invisible Giant | A large, bad-smelling giant, impossible to see except by the trees and things crashing down. |
J | |
Jump-At-A-Body | A creature all hair and legs and glower, who came across from Mundania not too long ago when Mundanes stopped believing. J-A-A-Bs dont have the courage to do anything bad; they just jump out and scare people, then run away. |
K | |
Kingfisher | A bird that fishes for kingfish. |
Kitty-Hawk | A small winged feline with the feathers and tail of a raptor. |
Knock-kneed Knights | Figure in metal armor who reside in the caverns adjacent to the pasture of the Cowboys and use the latter for their violent entertainment. They are from a far place called Kon-Krete where things are very hard, and without honor they are nothing. |
Kraken | A creature and a plant. A seaweed monster, always dangerous. |
L | |
Living Lava | Lava that flows deep beneath the surface of Xanth, it follows the victim, cutting them off, then consumes them. |
Loan Sharks | Big fish with colored fins, eager to make loans requiring the repayment of an arm and a leg. |
Love Bug | An insect the exists in both Xanth and Mundania. Its major propensity needs no explaining. |
Lutin | A foul-tempered, shape-changing creature. |
