S | |
Salamander | A fire-lizard that starts a magical fire that burns in the direction it starts regardless of other conditions. Water wont put it out, for it burns almost everything, even water. It can be put out by its own ashes, and it cant burn Salamander weed. |
Sand Dune | A heap of sand that moves on to beaches and takes them over; it rolls over prey and smothers them to eat at leisure. It believes that it is preserving fossils for posterity. It doesn't attack at night. |
Sea Monsters | Assorted large and small serpents who live in water and are always hungry. Some are enormous. |
Secretary Bird | A bird used for secretarial services, at time are bird-brained. |
Sel-Fish | A fish who sells instant gratification: dont worry about the welfare of others. For some reason, the sel-fish isnt much liked by others. |
Shade | A half-spirit, ghost, or some unquiet dead, doomed to skulk in shadow until its concern is abated. |
Shoefly | That says it all. |
Sidehill Hoofer | A cowlike creature whose two left legs are shorter than the right, to enable it to run around on the steep slope of a mountain. |
Simurgh | Wisest of all birds, she has seen the destruction and regeneration of the universe three times. She is the size of a roc, with feathers like veils of light and shadow and a crested head like fire. Her feathers have magicial healing properties. She is the Keeper of the Seeds, and can read minds. |
Sneeze Bees | Bees that make people sneeze, unlike Choke Bees that make people choke. Compare Bs. |
Snow-Birds | Birds that carry and deposit snowflakes. |
Spelling Bee | Attracted by letter plants, theres nothing such a bee cant spell, but it wont necessarily tell a person about homonyms. |
Sphinx | A monster with the face of a human being, body of a bull, wings of an eagle and legs of a lion, who likes riddles. One retreated to Mundania for a nap of several thousand years, and the ignorant Mundanes thought it was a statue and knocked off its nose. |
Spriggan | A giant ghost who haunts old castles and megalithic structures, tending to be destructive, which is why such structures break down. It can solidify its mouth and hands, to issue groans and shove stones. |
Spy Is | White eyeballs hovering in midair. They whistle Eye Spy! as they depart on their mission. |
Squiggles | Of the family of voles. Cousins of the wiggles, but larger and they dont swarm. They travel rapidly underground and are harmless, leaving piles of dirt at the surface. |
Storks | Birds that delivers babies. It is a peculiarity of storkish nature that there is always a delay in the delivery, and its is always to the mother. The mechanism for summoning a delivery is a secret known only to adults; see Adult Conspiracy. |
Succubus | Magical female creature who can assume any form, to seduce unwary males. It is surprising how many males are unwary. |
T | |
Tangle Trees | 'See Trees of Xanth' |
Tarasque | A horse-sized dragon with an armored shell, six ursine legs, reptilian tail, and head like that of an ant lion with tusks. It lacks fire, smoke, or steam, but is one tough creature. |
Thesaurus | A dinosaurlike creature given to the use of many words in lieu of one. Popular in Mundania. |
Tritons | 'See Mermen' |
U | |
Unicorns | Equines, almost as rare in Xanth as horses, though whole herds of them range other fantasy worlds. |
V | |
Villa | Like a Nymph but smarter and the ability to chang its form to protect its tree. |
Vole | A broad family of creatures ranging from the devastating little wiggles to the giant diggle. The extremes are wormlike, but the more central members, like the squiggles, are rodentlike. The Wiggles are wormlike. There is more to be learned of these. |
W | |
Wiggles | Smallest and worst of the voles. They are flying worms less than the length of a finger, loosely spiraled, that hover in midair, then zzapp forward, leaving a vacuum behind them. They drill through anything that gets in their way, instantly, which can be uncomfortable for animals. They are indifferent to external things, but can be killed by crushing, burning or cursing. Periodically they swarm, radiating out in a great sphere. When one of them gets where its going, it incubates for a new Swarm. Thus it is important that every member of a Swarm be exterminated and just about impossible. In Mundania they are much smaller and swarm mainly in buildings, and are contemptuously called termites. |
Will-O-The Wisps | Faint lights that dance about at the edge of perception, they are great teasers who will lure unsuspecting people into trouble. Herman the Hermit was able to communicated with them, and with their help saved Xanth from a wiggle Swarming. |
Wooden Knob | An unidentified object that reverses the emotion of those who touch it, making enemies of friends and vice versa. |
Wraith | A nocturnal ghostlike creature that roams at night. |
Wyvern | A small flying dragon with a barbed tail and only two legs. Vicious. Not very smart, as any expendable weight is sacrificed in the interest of lightness, and the heat of their fires tends to fry what remains of their brains. |
X | |
Xanth | Not a creature
but its the whole point of this site so... A land of magic that has a suspicious resemblance to the Mundane peninsulas of Florida, Italy, Korea, and the like. It is fashioned largely of puns, and everything makes sense in some magical way, such as Lake Wails supporting a whale with feet who makes the Prints of Wails. It has five Elemental regions and numerous special features, such as Mt. Parnassus and Lake Ogre-Chobee and the Isle of Illusions. Every person has a magic talent, of great or small extent, and most animals are magic. It is much easier to leave Xanth than to get into it. It represents the main link to reality for a number of zonkheaded Mundanes, such as the author. |
Y | |
Yak | A mooselike animal, who will talk your ear off. |
Z | |
Zombies | The Living Dead, always sloughing off rotten bits of themselves. They were set by the Zombie Master to guard Castle Roogna, and normally rouse themselves from their graves only when the Castle is threatened. Living folk shun them, but zombies are not bad creatures, and could be almost alive if a living person truly cared. They now have their own King, King Xeth, and are about to take up residence on one of Ida's many little moons. |
