Paws Quiet in the Night

I walk into the night alone,
to protect and to serve,
Someone I have never known.
But you are always there
and for me you will abide
my four pawed friend -----
so quiet by my side.

Foot for foot, paw for paw
together we unite.
To keep them safe and secure,
I know you are there,
Paws quiet in the night.

So many times, I look to you
those eyes which shine with trust,
to steady my fears;of which I fight,
Thank God you are there,
Paws quiet in the night.

But soon the stranger comes,
we both will never see.
So quickly he befalls us both,
as life fades from sight
I'm afraid, Please be with me
Paws that were quiet in the night!

The loyalty we shared for so long,
no one will ever take.
The warmness felt while through
the flight.  I felt it, you felt it,
Goodbye------

History:

Last month, in less than two weeks time, there were two fatal shooting incidents involving police officers in our area.  The first one took place on Feb. 18, 2000.  A county K-9 unit was sent to a country home to check on a woman that had not shown up for work for a couple of days.

When the officer arrived, he knocked on the door, it slipped open.  He announced himself as he stepped inside the home.  A gunman was waiting in ambush.  The officer was shot approx. 6 times with a shotgun before he made it to cover in a nearby stand of trees.  While he was in those trees, the gunman approached the officer's car, opened the door, and shot and killed the K-9 officer Falco.  The human officer was wearing his vest and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

I was working on the ambulance that treated the human officer.  It was a very intense and emotional scene.  The gunman later set the house on fire and shot himself.  Both of his parents were found shot to death a short distance from the home.  There was a memorial service for Falco.  My husband and myself attended it.  It was a very sad service with representatives from many Kansas police departments.

The booklet at the funeral had "Paws Quiet in the Night" in it.  I have heard many people say the Falco "was just a dog", but I feel differently.  He was a trained peace officer, and like all K-9 officers, he protected and served the community.

I have two wonderful dogs of my own that provide me companionship and peace of mind when my husband is working over night.  To me, a dog is not a pet.  A dog is a companion.
